The Institute of Hawaiian Music at UH Maui College is gearing up for its Fall 2015 semester with a special information session for prospective students, parents and other interested parties Friday, March 13th, 2015 from 4PM to 6PM in the college’s Ka‘a‘ike Building, Room 105 CD. The Institute of Hawaiian Music is a one-of-a-kind musical mentorship program dedicated to the perpetuation and preservation of Hawaiian music. Students learn the instrumental, vocal, and technical skills needed to be successful in the industry, with formal university classes supplemented by direct mentorship sessions led by professional Hawaiian musicians. Visiting mentors have included Keali‘i Reichel, Kenneth Makuakāne, Mailani Makainai, Keola Beamer, Kainani Kahaunaele, Aaron Salā, Raiatea Helm, Jake Shimabukuro, Barry Flanagan, Mark Yamanaka, and former IHM director and Grammy Award-winning slack key guitarist George Kahumoku, Jr. “Starting a career in Hawaiian music can be a challenge,” said the institute’s Faculty Coordinator, Dr. Keola Donaghy. “Aspiring musicians are often left to their own devices to locate willing mentors and performance partners, receive personal training, find gigs, gain performance experience, produce a recording, and learn the steps necessary to break into the industry. Many don’t reach their true potential because they don’t receive career guidance from experienced, professional musicians.” Auditions will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2013 from 9AM to 4PM at Ka‘a‘ike Building, Room 105 CD. Prospective students will be expected to perform for six minutes, introduce themselves and their song(s), sing and play their instruments, and carry themselves in a professional manner. Prospective students interested in community health can take advantage of two new short-term certificate programs launching this fall at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College. The certificates can be earned in one or two semesters, with class schedules designed for participants already balancing work and family obligations. The new Community Health Worker/Health Navigator 1 Certificate of Competence requires 15 credits, and will allow participants to finish in less than a year. New distance learning options will be also be available for Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Hāna, and Lāhainā. Community health workers (CHWs) in Maui County hold job titles that include outreach specialist, wellness navigator, program assistant, and health aide. They serve as bridges between the community and healthcare and social services providers, helping to ensure services are accessible and culturally appropriate. CHWs often provide care coordination and supportive counseling. “This work is about trust and compassion,” said Haunani Kamakana, a navigator at Molokaʻi General Hospital. They also focus on prevention, leading outreach and education efforts and supporting individuals, families, and communities in making healthy changes. Dr. Joe Humphry, Medical Director of the Lānaʻi Community Health Center, notes that “CHWs connect people to the resources they need to stay healthy, detect problems early on and improve management of chronic conditions. They are essential members of our health care team.” The CHW certificate was developed with input from local healthcare, public health, and social service employers, as well as national and state efforts like Hawaiʻi’s Healthcare Innovation Plan, and workforce studies conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The public is invited to attend a GIS Showcase on Wednesday, May 13 from 5:00-8:00pm at the Maui Brewing Company in the Kihei Tech Park. UH Maui College students earning Certificates of Competence in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Ecosystem Management will share final projects including endemic Hawaiian tree snail populations in Maui County, energy efficiency mapping, and effects of East Maui Irrigation seepage on stream health. “The GIS Certificate program has given me the freedom to choose where I would like to go in my education and has opened new career options for me,” said UHMC student Heather Kotok. The student presentations will offer the opportunity for interested employers, internship sponsors, prospective students, and community organizations to learn more about GIS. “A world of opportunity awaits people developing skills in GIS,” said Craig Clouet, Solutions Engineer at Esri, a global GIS software company with an office in Honolulu. “Many jobs use GIS extensively, and Esri supports that Maui College has been so proactive in educating and promoting GIS to their students. Students leaving the program with these abilities can go anywhere to meet the needs of both existing jobs, and those not yet invented,” he said. GIS skills are in high demand on Maui through the growing high-tech industry. “At the Pacific Disaster Center, we are currently using GIS to help coordination of international disaster relief operations in Nepal by producing maps ranging from damage assessments to the location of international Search And Rescue teams. GIS is an integral part of the technologies employed at PDC for disaster risk reduction,” said Ray Shirkhodai, Executive Director. Driving past UH Maui College April 6th you might have noticed over 100 UH Maui College faculty, students and staff gathered along the W. Ka’ahumanu Avenue entrance. As part of the “Get Your Reg On!!!” campaign, they waved at passing cars and held signs to show their school spirit and help promote summer and fall class registration, which starts April 13th. “Right now there’s still financial aid available, and we wanted to get the word out about registration a week before it starts so people apply and get that financial aid paperwork underway,” said Cathy Bio, Vice Chancellor of Student Services. “But it was also an opportunity to show our school spirit – I think everyone driving by could see how enthusiastic we are about our students and the college.” Among the UHMC programs that came to support the event were Admissions & Records, Kabatak, Counseling, Dental Hygiene, Liberal Arts, and Hospitality & Tourism as well as executive staff including Chancellor Lui K. Hokoana. The event was broadcast live by Pacific Media Group, with hosts Trance and Tre Tre from Da Jam 98.3. The competency-based instruction focuses on skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed for success in the hospitality industry. Lab requirements include basic hand tools, knives, safety shoes, books, appropriate uniforms, proof of negative TB test, and compliance with culinary personal hygiene code requirements. Both the Culinary Arts and Baking Associate in Applied Science specialty degrees are fully accredited by the ACFEFAC (American Culinary Federation Education Foundation Accrediting Commission). Minimum placement test levels of English 22 and Mathematics 50H are required for all incoming Culinary Arts students. It is strongly recommended that prospective students meet with Culinary Arts advisors before entry into Culinary Arts courses. These students are taking courses leading towards certificates and associate degrees in seven primary majors: Liberal Arts, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Business Careers, Early Childhood Education, Hawaiian Studies, Human Services, and Allied Health: Nurse Aide Training and Therapeutic Activity Aide I & II. The University Center, Maui brings a variety of bachelors and masters degree programs to Molokai from the campuses of UH Manoa, UH Hilo, UH West Oahu utilizing interactive, off-island travel, and the Internet. Background The Technical Support Committee was formed in September 2001 for the purpose of improving communication and addressing problems in the technical areas of instruction. Original committee members included the Acting Dean and Acting Provost as well as faculty and other support members. Purpose To improve communication regarding technical aspect of instruction among the various technical providers and users campus-wide. To hear and address problems that arise in the technical aspects of instruction. To advise the administration regarding technology purchases and allocations. Sub-Committees There shall be established sub-committees as may be determined appropriate by membership of the Committee. Membership The Technical Support Committee shall consist of no more than eleven (11) members. Members shall represent campus technical, instructional, administrative, and support functions to best accomplish the committee’s purpose.Committee membership may includes, but is not limited to, representatives of: Computing Services, Media Services, The Learning Center, Library, Ka Lama Computer Center, Department Chairs, Administration, and faculty/staff with relevant expertise.
