Education > Researching colleges
Selecting and financing a college education is much like selecting and buying a car. It requires research into costs and payment options. There are many research sources available in hardcopy or on the web.

Many websites are free and comprehensive. Others are commercial sites whose major goal is to sell you products or services. Be wary. More than 350,000 people annually are cheated out of $5 million dollars through scholarship and loan scams. Information about financial aid, scholarships, and college research is available FOR FREE.

The Educational Opportunity Center has on-line access to more than 25,000 college catalogs, high-speed Internet access, and two- and four-year college directories. Our advisors are available to teach you how to research for freshman entrance or transferring into another college.

One of the best and most complete FREE college research sites is collegeboard.com. Collegeboard is a national nonprofit membership association whose mission is to inspire and connect students to colleges and opportunities. Their site provides college planning, college search, application, and payment planning tools, as well as the ability to compare up to three colleges or universities at a time.

Freshman and Transfer Checklists
Once you've researched your colleges of interest, you'll be ready to use the appropriate enrollment checklist to analyze admissions requirements, costs and payment options. The enrollment checklists are pdf files that require Adobe Acrobat for viewing.

Deadlines and timelines
Although the Fall semester begins in late August, most colleges have March 1 priority deadlines for college and student housing applications, and federal financial aid filings. Financial aid forms and current scholarships are available at EOC.

Here is a general timeline to get your started:

January
The financial aid season begins with the release of federal financial aid forms (FAFSA) and college applications and documents for the next academic year (Fall through the summer of the following year). The application deadlines for many mainland colleges and major scholarship applications, is March 1st, so if you’re planning on attending an off-island 4-year college begin now. Don’t forget to research transfer and major requirements!

February
If applicable, complete the tax returns needed for the financial aid form. If you are a dependent student, (under 24 years of age, unmarried, no dependents, not an orphan, and not a veteran) you will also need your parent's financial information. Schedule an appointment with an EOC counselor to review the financial aid form (FAFSA) and input it on-line (984-3286). It takes 4-6 weeks from the date the FAFSA is inputted before a financial aid award letter is received.

March
Many private scholarships and mainland college and dorm applications are due. Preferred deadline for FAFSA filing.

April
MCC Fall Schedule of Classes will be available. Begin preparing for FALL registration by completing placement testing. Be prepared to select the college you will be attending and complete all college applications.

June-August
Fall registration begins. Tuition must be paid at the time of registration to guarantee classes. Financial aid award letters are mailed. You should be preparing for college off-island by making sure your admissions, financial aid, housing, and registration is handled. You will also need to make sure you have the appropriate clothing, learning tools (computer?), and transporation available.

Mid-August

Fall semester begins. You should be at your college by now. Good luck. It is not too late for financial aid. You have until March of the following year* to apply for the fall and spring semesters. (*If you continue from Fall to Spring, some colleges will allow you to apply retroactively for federal financial aid.)

October
Spring schedule of classes available. Spring registration begins in November and ends with the start of the semester in mid-January
