Netscape User Profile Instructions

Using Netscape 4.61 Messenger E-Mail Program

for PC and Macintosh Platforms

This document contains basic instructions for setting up User Profiles for different users using Netscape 4.61 or greater. User Profiles allow different users to share Netscape resources on the same computer. Three common situations which warrant multiple profiles on a single computer include: If you share your office computer with another person, if you share your home computer with someone who has their own e-mail account, or if you access more than one e-mail account on your home computer.

Netscape version 4.5 brought the capability to configure multiple servers during the same Messenger session for a user. If you have multiple servers in the UH system that you need to access during the same Messenger session, this is accomplished by configuring multiple servers using the document entitled E-Mail Setup At Home For MCCADA (step 8 - 11) or E-Mail Setup on MCC Campus for MCCADA (steps 11 - 14). E-mail accounts using POP3 incoming server type cannot be included and must have their own user profile.

The following images were taken from a Netscape browser on a PC. Macintosh (Mac) windows are very similar to the images below. Besides textual differences between the platforms, other differences found pertained to PC configuration using text fields, while Mac configuration used buttons. There are ten steps in creating a profile on a Mac using the Profile Manager (includes extra configuration options) compared to six steps using the Profile Manager on a PC.

If you're adding another user profile on the campus computer, first configure one e-mail account following the instructions found in the document, E-Mail Setup on MCC Campus for MCCADA.

If you're adding another profile on your home computer, ensure TCP/IP configuration and e-mail access to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) has already been established on your home computer following the instructions provided to you by your ISP.

1. Launch the Profile Manager:

Start | Programs | Netscape Communicator | Utilities | User Profile Manager

2. If you're at home and accessing your ISP e-mail account with Messenger, you already have at least one Netscape profile configured for your ISP; it was previously named default or some other name when you launched Netscape for the first time. This profile name will be displayed in the Profile Manager list below. You may wish to rename default, say, to the name of your ISP to avoid any ambiguity. For example, if your ISP is MauiNet, rename default to MauiNet so that a profile for MauiNet and MCCADA are displayed in the list, rather than default and MCCADA.

If you're on campus and your officemate is accessing their MCC e-mail, there is already one Netscape profile defined for your officemate. This profile may be simply named default. This profile name will be displayed in the Profile Manager list. You may wish to rename default, say, to the name of your officemate to avoid any ambiguity. For example, if the user who first configured the computer accepted the name default, rename default to your officemate's name so names are displayed in the list, rather than default and your name.

The following steps use the example of creating a new profile for MCCADA on your home computer. If you are creating a new profile for yourself on your office computer use the settings found between square brackets, [ ] .

3. To rename a profile, click once on the name (in this case default) to enable the Rename button. Click on the Rename button, enter a new name and click the Rename button in the dialog box.

[On campus this would be renaming default to the name of the officemate originally configured on the office computer.]
