Instructions for Completing Web Forms

Those using text-based browsers are able to use the tab key or the down-arrow key to move between choices and/or data entry fields. However, when using most graphical browsers you must move the mouse pointer to the circle representing the choice and click to choose.

For example, to indicate that you are applying for Fall 1999, move the pointer to the circle immediately preceeding "FALL 1999" and click.

Indicate Semester Entering: FALL 1999 SPRING 2000

To move to the data fields, move your cursor to the box and click; a cursor will appear in the box, enabling you to use your keyboard to enter the necessary data. You may use the tab key to move between successive data fields, but the tab key will not move you to the circles which represent choices, nor will it move you from a choice to a data field. If you are at the last data field on the screen, the tab key will not move you to the next data field, pulling it into view on the screen as it does with a text-based browser; in this instance use the scroll bar to repositon the unseen portion of the form onto the screen.

Some data fields require specific input; they don't let you type in your own response. If you are using a text-based browser, you can use your tab or down-arrow key to highlight this type of data field; then you press the enter key in order to see the pull-down menu. Using the up- and down-arrow keys highlight the appropriate selection and then press the enter or right-arrow key.

If you use a graphical browser, you must click on the arrow to the right of the input box to see the various selections in a pull-down menu. If there are too many items on the pull-down menu to fit on the screen, use the menu's scroll bar until the appropriate response is found. Then click on the desired response. Try it below:

At the end of the form you will normally have two options, one to submit the form and one to clear the form (in case you want to redo it). The following are typical of what you will find at the end of the form. If you have a text-based browser, use your down-arrow key to highlight the desired operation, and press the enter or right-arrow key. These operations appear as buttons to those with a graphical browser.

You may wish to use your left-arrow key or click on your browser's "Back" button to exit this introduction to completing HTML forms.
