What is Degree-in-3?

The UHMC Degree-in-3 (nicknamed the D-3) offers students a unique opportunity to earn an Associate in Arts (A.A.) in Liberal Arts by attending day or evening and online/cable TV classes. All courses in the program are reserved for the D-3 to attain the A.A. in Liberal Arts within the three year time frame—hence, the Degree-in-3 program. Students enter the program as part of a cohort that is focused on achieving the same goal, and take three classes each semester and one summer class. Students can start at the beginning of fall or spring semester. The degree may be earned in less time for those with completed credits (for more information about credit transfer, please visit transferring credits to University of Hawai`i Maui College).

D-3 Preliminary Program Application

After completing the D-3 Preliminary Progam Application please schedule an appointment with UHMC D-3 counselor, Kyla W. Kapakū  at (808) 984-3306 to schedule an initial interview to join the D-3 Program.

Kapaku.  An information session can offer you the opportunity to learn more about the Degree-in-3 program experience – financial aid, academic advising, COMPASS placement, admission, registration, UH Center Degree Programs, and other topics may also be covered.

Day Program

  • Day classes provide a more traditional method offering classes two days a week on Mondays and Wednesdays OR Tuesdays and Thursdays at various times. (e.g. 9 a.m. to 10:15 am, 10:30am-11:45pm, 12pm-1:15pm, 1:30pm-2:45pm, 3pm-4:30pm) for 16 weeks in fall and spring semesters.

Evening Program

  • Evening classes generally meet one night a week per course from 6pm to 9 p.m. for 16 weeks in fall and spring semesters.

Online Program

  • Online classes do not meet but you are required to log on regularly to complete required assignments.
  • Three classes in the fall
  • Three classes in the spring
  • One class in summer session (times vary)

Who is eligible for the Degree-in-Three?

  • Students with Accuplacer placement at English 100
  • Students who have successfully completed English 22
  • Students who have prior college credits

Where are the classes held?

Degree-in-3 classes are either held on the UHMC campus OR via online through the Laulima system and are taught by UHMC instructors. Students are provided with a full array of support services.

What is a Liberal Arts Degree?

The Associate in Arts degree program in Liberal Arts prepares students for transfer to a baccalaureate degree program at a four-year college or university. The AA degree in Liberal Arts requires 60 semester credits in courses numbered 100 or higher. The curriculum instills foundational skills and a broad scope of knowledge that fosters academic success in upper division course works, effective citizenship and an appreciation for lifelong learning. Degree-in-3 students can use the degree as a stepping stone for transfer into bachelor’s programs at UHMC, University Center Maui distance education programs, or elsewhere.
