Lava Flow Mapping

Our GIS Team on Hawaiʻi island, as a part of our Certificate Program here at UHMC, worked with Dr. Ryan Perroy’s un-manned drone project at the University of Hawaiʻi Hilo to map out the lava flow that is encroaching on Puna town. Their story was filmed by a crew on the Discovery Channel and is viewable online here – it’s an awesome project and we are so proud of them! Our students are learning GIS mapping techniques and getting awesome real life experiences. Congratulations to Victor Rasgado, our GIS Specialist on Hawaiʻi island who instructed our UHMC Certificate students on that island and who got them out in the field for this important work!

Hawai’i Community College students in the Architectural, Engineering and CAD Technologies Program got the “experience of a lifetime” when they used their skills at the Kilauea lava flow in Puna on Hawai’i Island. Watch the video to hear them talk about their experiences.
