In spring 2013 the Hawaii State Legislature appropriated $3.4 Million for the renovation of the former University of Hawaii Maui College student dormitory in Kahului into the Hospitality Academy of Maui, an “Educational and Training Laboratory” that integrates student learning in lodging operations, sustainability, energy, and aquaculture.
Thanks to the generous support of Maui business and community organizations, the Academy renovation blueprints are completed and the project is “shovel-ready”, and will begin construction in fall, 2013.
The UHMC Hospitality Advisory Council, representing top Hawaii hospitality and business organizations, has launched a campaign for gifts that will furnish the Lobby and Rooms. Ultimately, the Academy shall provide an authentic hands-on career-related job experience for a wide range of students and subject majors, plus an outstanding experience for visitors to Kahului, Maui, the first such project ever implemented in Hawaii, where hospitality is the State’s major economic sector.
The UHMC Hospitality Advisory Council goal is to raise $3,000,000 in monetary donations and gifts-in-kind for the first Hospitality Laboratory in Hawaii. Funds are needed for Room furnishings, Lobby renovations, IT software and equipment, Garden planting and maintenance, and much, much more.
The campaign launches in summer 2013 with monthly guided tours of the Hospitality Academy of Maui. The Committee is planning quarterly events with Lead Donor announcements and renovation updates. The campaign will culminate in spring 2015 with the Hospitality Academy of Maui grand opening.
