The Cohort

The cohort is intended to promote student development through extra-curricular activities, personal counseling and specific workshops designed for the students’ needs. An added tool for both counselor and student is the new Chalknwire e-Protfolio. Each student will be given a year subscription for the use and development of their personal e-protfolio. In addition, students will have access to the Hookahua Student Center in Ka Lama 202 that includes computer usage, tutors, study area and a friendly atmosphere. Finally, a stipend of up to $700 per semester for a full-time student will be paid to students upon completion of their course work with C’s or better.

ELIGIBILITY

In order to qualify for the Ho‘okahua Student Cohort, student must meet at least one of the following requirements:

1. Majoring in Agriculture & Natural Resources or Electronic & Computer Engineering Technology (ECET) at Maui Community College (MCC)

2. MCC Liberal Arts major with the intention of transferring into a STEM major at a 4-year University

3. Currently enrolled in two or more STEM courses

REQUIREMENTS

1. Grade Checks
     • Students must show academic progress by submitting monthly grade
  checks for all STEM courses. Grade checks are due on the following days: February15, March 20, and April 25 by 4:30pm to Ka Lama 115.

2.  Academic Advising
     • Students must meet with an academic advisor at least once during the   
       semester and upload a copy of their educational plan to Chalk-n-Wire.

3. Chalk & Wire
     • You will be given a year subscription for the use and development of a
        personal e-portfolio called Chalk-n-Wire.
     • Students are required to upload various information relating to academic
       progress, must upload one (1) evidence of learning to Chalk-n-Wire
      STEM courses

4. Cultural Development
     • If you are taking a Hawaiian Studies or Hawaiian Language course you
       must attend at least 2 cultural development activities coordinated by
       Hookahua. If you are not enrolled in a Hawaiian studies or Hawaiian
      Language course you must attend at least 4 cultural development activities.
     Upload a reflection paper for each activity you attended to your Chalk-n-
     Wire account.

5. Monthly Check-Ups
    • You must meet with Kehau Newhouse, Hookahua's Student Programs
      Coordinator in person, via e-mail, or by phone once per month.
