Community Thoughts on the 2018 Maui Fair

Community Thoughts on the 2018 Maui Fair
November 14, 2018 Aramis Davis

The 96th Annual Maui Fair kicked off between October 4th through 7th made possible thanks to the collaboration of our community from all over Hawai’i. The joy zone, events arena, street party, concession stands, and the parade across Ka’ahumanu Avenue were the most popular attractions during the event. In addition, the horticultural, multimedia art, and livestock contest exhibits featured a wide range of entries from all over the island, but this area in particular had a number of non-local entries taking the top prizes.

During this year’s Maui Fair, I was able to interview three locals on their thoughts and reasons for attending. Jenny, volunteer at the UHMC booth, found the wide variety of events and collection of the island were the best parts of the Maui fair. Although, very specific areas such as the livestock and local performers were the most astonishing events to Jenny. Charlette Arruda, event staff for the Maui fair, felt that although she doesn’t get a chance to enjoy the fair as a worker, the event is one of the most organized among the other Hawaiian Islands. Blaine Bernades, a local father attending with his family, visits for the sake of tradition as the locals look forward to seeing the Maui fair every year. The last question I asked all of them was: “What do you believe is the most important aspect of the fair?” and all of their responses were the same: “To bring together the community of Maui for tradition, family, and memories.” Arruda even mentioned some of the event staff were inmates integrated to assist with the fair through a work program, which lessens the labor needed and benefits the inmates with time back in the public.

Now, although I would’ve mentioned the steeper prices of the fair in the past few years, our community is both the foundation and spirit of the Maui fair. Our local sponsors, fundraisers, and staff for the fair made the entire event possible. Especially for the fundraiser food booths that most of the community loves, paying a little extra for the local attractions are helping fund community projects as well as reward the hard work they’ve done. Overall, this year’s Maui Fair of 2018 has indeed been another “timeless tradition celebrating the good old days”.
