Local Art Nights on Maui

Lahaina town during Second Friday.

Have you ever wanted to go out on Friday night, but weren’t sure what the options were? A fun choice could be Maui Friday Night Town Party. This runs each Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. Here, you can stroll around and look at local and international arts, meet artists, and find some treasures to purchase along the way.  Some of the highlights include live entertainment, people watching, local vendors, artisan craft makers and a full night of activities.

Maui Art Night originated in the quant town of Wailuku at the foot of Iao Valley. This festivity has been hosting art night for residents and visitors since 2008. The Friday Art Nights were created to showcase Maui’s historic towns and share what makes each one of them unique and special. First Friday is held in Wailuku, Second Friday is held in Lahaina, Third Friday is held in Makawao, Fourth Friday is held in Kihei and Fifth Friday, if there is one, is held in Lāna’i.

Lahaina, an original port town sitting next to the shores of the Pacific Ocean, has over 18 professional galleries and is a treat to visit. Included in the activities are artist talks and demos, which are always interesting to see. Makawao town, the only town upcountry to host the Friday Town Party, is full of local shops and even a couple restaurants. Casanovas, right in the middle of Makawao town, is a popular hangout on the third Friday of the month. In the heart and soul of Kihei, Azeka Shopping Center has its own style and entertainment with lots of visitors. If you’re lucky, you may hear the Hawaiian master Willie K playing music. Lāna’i residents get to share in the fun a few times per year when the months run long.

The events are all supportive of the community, which means they are all child friendly, and draw locals and visitors alike to enjoy the activities. Folks join under the starry skies of Maui, among color, music and new faces in a festive environment. You never know what artist or musician will show up. Some vendors offer free classes, such as yoga, and there is always plenty of food to try.

First Fridays are generously sponsored by the County of Maui, Maui Visitors Bureau, and additional sponsors.  Mahalo Nui Loa Maui for sharing the talents and works of the island for all to experience.
