The Value of Volunteering

The Value of Volunteering
December 2, 2019 Rosa Barker

On October 19, the Molokai Community Health Center and the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii held a free kidney disease screening for locals. After check-in, those who attended the screening progressed to a series of stations where the key metrics used to gauge the likelihood of kidney disease were recorded, such as height, weight, blood pressure, and blood glucose levels. Each station was staffed by volunteers, including Jade Dela Cruz, pictured below.

“Not only was I able to put some hours down for our program,” Jade says, “but also to give back to our community. Coming from a small island and wanting to become a nurse, I wanted to be someone to make an impact on our island. The values that I received from volunteering are making a difference and being a part of the community. I volunteer not only on Moloka‘i but also at the Maui Marathon, therefore I can be a part of different communities.”

“Volunteering helps me to meet new people and gain experience and learn new skills.”

Juli Patao, the CareerLink Director, agrees: “Volunteering allows students to explore different opportunities in life that shape our character, teaching us to serve people and have compassion to build a better community. Most importantly, these opportunities improve students’ networking skills and you never know who you might meet that could directly point you towards exploring a potential future career path.”

In addition, volunteering looks great on a resume as it shows employers you have a passion to serve. CareerLink can help students find an agency that is looking for volunteers. You should also keep an eye out for flyers asking for volunteers, which is what led Jade to the NKFH event on Moloka‘i.

CareerLink helps students prepare for a job/career by finding opportunities in Cooperative Education (internships). Juli explains that “some academic programs require Co-Op as a class requirement, other students may enroll in Co-Op to fulfill a course elective. It’s a great opportunity for students to explore their major and practice hands on skills that can also be listed on their resume.”

Whichever career exploration path interests you, CareerLink is there to support your needs and all you have to do is drop by their office in Ka Lama 101 or call them at 984-3318.
