The Institute of Hawaiian Music presents a celebration of the music of Maui for the entire ‘ohana. The theme of this year’s inaugural ALOHA MAUI MUSIC FESTIVAL is “Aloha ‘Ia Nō ‘O Maui” (Maui is truly beloved). Entertainers include Mailani, Kenneth Makuakāne, George Kahumoku, Nā Wai ‘Ehā, hālau Pā‘ū O Hi‘iaka (under the direction of Kumu Hula Hōkulani Holt) and the students of the Institute of Hawaiian Music at UH Maui College. Need to develop your instrumental, vocal, and technical skills, and learn from award winning recording artists and composers? You can do all of this and much more as a student in the Institute of Hawaiian Music, which is accepting new students starting in Fall 2015.

It was an incredibly busy and productive week for IHM students.
On Wednesday, students Leihuanani Keali‘inohomoku, Destiny Mahaulu, and Kalani Librando-Souza performed for a private function at the Kea Lani Resort in Wailea. That evening, ten of us attended George Kahumoku’s Slack Key Show in Nāpili with the evening’s guest performer Nathan Aweau. On Thursday during our Applied Music Class, students were joined by IHM graduate and George Kahumoku Outstanding Student Award Winner Brad Bordessa. Students will be playing before a community meeting sponsored by Hui O Nā Wai ‘Ehā, a group that has been fighting to return the flow to the four famous waters (Waihe‘e, Wai‘ehu, Wailuku and Waikapū). We will perform from 5:30 until 6PM, before the community meeting starts at the Wailuku Community Center.
