Moonlight Mele on Saturday, January 3, 2015

The first Moonlight Mele performance of 2015 will be held at the Bailey House Museum on Saturday, January 3, 2015. Join our Institute of Hawaiian Music students and Uncle George Kahumoku Jr at the Maui Historical Society/Bailey House Museum in Wailuku. The event opens at 5PM, General admission is $20, kama‘āina admission is $10, children are free. Food and drink will be available for purchase.

The students and staff of the Institute of Hawaiian Music wish to extend our best wishes to all for a happy and prosperous 2015! We have many performances planned for this semester, a big concert event in April, will be producing a new compilation CD, and many students will be graduating in May!

Busy Week For IHM Students

It was an incredibly busy and productive week for IHM students.

On Wednesday, students Leihuanani Keali‘inohomoku, Destiny Mahaulu, and Kalani Librando-Souza performed for a private function at the Kea Lani Resort in Wailea. That evening, ten of us attended George Kahumoku’s Slack Key Show in Nāpili with the evening’s guest performer Nathan Aweau. On Thursday during our Applied Music Class, students were joined by IHM graduate and George Kahumoku Outstanding Student Award Winner Brad Bordessa. Busy First Week of November for IHM Students

Our IHM students have three gigs this week, all are open-to-thepublic events:

  • Wed, Nov 5, 2014. Students will be playing before a community meeting sponsored by Hui O Nā Wai ‘Ehā, a group that has been fighting to return the flow to the four famous waters (Waihe‘e, Wai‘ehu, Wailuku and Waikapū). We will perform from 5:30 until 6PM, before the community meeting starts at the Wailuku Community Center.
  • Fri, Nov 7, 2014. Students will perform at the Made In Maui Festival at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center from 5:20-6PM.

UHMC Music Club To Host Next Monthly Open Mic On Thursday, October 23 For The Community Of Maui

Love to sing, play an instrument, slam poetry, do magic tricks, stand-up comedy, karaoke, act, dance – hula? Come perform (or just watch) at The Music Club of University of Hawaii – Maui College Open Mic on Thursday October 23, 6 – 9 pm at the Student Lounge. IHM at Kaho‘olawe Exhibit at Bailey House Museum

On Friday, October 10th from 6 – 9 PM, students of the Institute of Hawaiian music will be performing at an opening reception for the new exhibition “He Moku Poina ‘Ole, An Island Not Forgotten” at the Bailey House Museum in Wailuku. The exhibition will be on view through November 3, 2014. Summer Updates and Upcoming Performances

It’s been a busy summer for those of us in the Institute of Hawaiian Music. Many of our students spent the summer rehearsing with their groups and performing at venues around Hawai‘i. We’re grateful to the individuals, groups, organizations, and companies that have supported us and provided performance opportunities for our students.
