HWST/MUS176 History of Hawaiian Music

One of the new music offerings at UH-MC is “History of Hawaiian Music”, taught by Dr. Keola Donaghy. He taught a similar class at UH-Hilo for eight years, and is now offering the class online through the UH system’s Laulima courseware system.

While the class does have two prerequisite courses listed , Keola will happily waive them for you. Simply email donaghy@hawaii.edu with your name and UH ID number, and he will issue you a permit to register for the class.

Maui’s answer to the audience for an annual hula competition: prestigious judges and award-winning halau on this island! Our 8th annual Ku Mai Ka Hula event features hālau winners from Japan, Hawaii and the West Coast, performing in both solo and group performances, women and men. The dancers compete in kahiko (traditional hula) and ‘auana (modern-day hula stylings) in both male and female categories, judged by renowned kumu hula: a day of inspiring and memorable hula, as you might expect to see in more well-known competitions — but without the interisland travel!
