Our IHM students have three gigs this week, all are open-to-thepublic events: Wed, Nov 5, 2014. Students will be playing before a community meeting sponsored by Hui O Nā Wai ‘Ehā, a group that has been fighting to return the flow to the four famous waters (Waihe‘e, Wai‘ehu, Wailuku and Waikapū). We will perform from 5:30 until 6PM, before the community meeting starts at the Wailuku Community Center. Fri, Nov 7, 2014. Students will perform at the Made In Maui Festival at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center from 5:20-6PM. Sat, Nov 8, 2014.Students will perform at the monthly Moonlight Mele event at the Bailey House Museum/Maui Historical Society in Wailuku. We will be joined by Uncle George Kahumoku and perhaps others at this event. Please stay tuned, we have more gigs coming up in November and December!

Come perform (or just watch) at The Music Club of University of Hawaii – Maui College Open Mic on Thursday October 23, 6 – 9 pm at the Student Lounge. UHMC students, staff and faculty invited along with the whole community of Maui. All talents, All ages. Free admission and free food. This is a family event with food and all kinds of talent found in Maui. “So many open mics are just for music, held late at night and is not for family.” says Karyn Sarring faculty advisor to the Music Club. “We wanted to showcase all the different talents in our community.” Next open mic will be November 20th which will include a performance by the UH-MC Chorus.
On Friday, October 10th from 6 - 9 PM, students of the Institute of Hawaiian music will be performing at an opening reception for the new exhibition "He Moku Poina 'Ole, An Island Not Forgotten" at the Bailey House Museum in Wailuku. The exhibition will be on view through November 3, 2014. Featuring pieces from the Bishop Museum's Kaho'olawe: Rebirth of a Sacred Hawaiian Island (1996, Honolulu, HI) and Smithsonian Institution's Ke Aloha Kupaa I Ka Aina -- Steadfast Love for the Land (2002, Washington, D.C.) collections, our exhibition was curated under the guidance of Hokulani Holt, will be installed by former Schaefer International Gallery Director Darrell Orwig and is being sponsored by Maui Historical Society/Bailey House Museum, Haleakala Distilleries, UHMC's Institute of Hawaiian Music, and more on the way. IHM Group 'Maunaleo' performing at the annual Kauaua ‘Ohana reunion in Pukalani in May It's been a busy summer for those of us in the Institute of Hawaiian Music. Many of our students spent the summer rehearsing with their groups and performing at venues around Hawai‘i. We’re grateful to the individuals, groups, organizations, and companies that have supported us and provided performance opportunities for our students. We do have performances the next three Fridays in August - August 1, 8 and 15, 2014, at the lobby of the Kea Lani Resort in Wailea from 4:30-5:30PM. Admission is free, and all are welcomed to join us. We will also be joining Uncle George Kahumoku at the Moonlight Mele concert at the Bailey House Museum in Wailuku on Saturday, August 9, 7-9PM. We are about three weeks from the start of the Fall semester. We did not hold full auditions for the fall, but will be adding a few new and well-prepared students to our current group. A number of students in our inaugual Elementary Hawaiian Steel Guitar class peformed at the Maui Steel Guitar Festival this past Saturday at the Ka‘ānapali Beach Hotel. Mahalo to their kumu Joel Katz for preparing and accompanying them during the performance. Many in attendance were suprised but delighted to learn that steel guitar is a regular course at Music at UH Maui College, and will be offered again next semester. We will be offering a combined Elementary and Intermediate steel guitar class in the fall. Please stay tuned for details!
IHM Students visiting the Morning Goddess at KPOA Mahalo to the Morning Goddess, Alaka‘i Paleka, Island Boy and Sista Val for having us on the KPOA 93.5 FM morning show this morning to talk about our upcoming performance at Kama‘āina Nights at Ka‘ahumanu Center, this Friday, February 28 at 6-7 PM. We hope that many of you will attend and support our IHM students! We are making big plans for the big end-of-year concert that the students will be performing along with UHMC Chorus and Hawaiian Chorus students. Stay tuned!
Some of the students in the Institute of Hawaiian Music's second cycle of classes, who will complete the program in Spring 2015. Please join us this Friday, February 28. 2014 as our Institute of Hawaiian Music students open Kama‘āina Nights at the Ka‘ahumanu Shopping Center in Kahului. They will perform from 6-7PM, opening for Maui’s own Ikaika Blackburn. We will have two different student groups performing that night, and hope you will join us!
