We look forward to our final workshop and concert this the semester on Wednesday May 7th from 5 to 8 PM. We will begin with solo performances followed by intermission and then group playing.
A number of students in our inaugual Elementary Hawaiian Steel Guitar class peformed at the Maui Steel Guitar Festival this past Saturday at the Ka‘ānapali Beach Hotel. Mahalo to their kumu Joel Katz for preparing and accompanying them during the performance. Many in attendance were suprised but delighted to learn that steel guitar is a regular course at Music at UH Maui College, and will be offered again next semester. For the first time, UH Maui College has offered a class in Hawaiian Steel Guitar - an important milestone in perpetuating this beautiful Hawaiian instrument and playing technique. Along with instructor and steel guitar performer Joel Katz, we expect to have 12 students representing our program performing at 11:30 this Saturday April 12, 014 at the Kaanapali Beach hotel for the annual Maui Steel Guitar Festival. Having this many students performing is unprecedented! Joel is a featured solo performer this year, and will be performing at 2:30 on Friday and other times throughout the weekend. We hope that you can attend and enjoy our students’ performance, and that of the many other practitioners that will be at the festival.
