MUS203 Instrumental Ensemble

ensembleMUS203 is a new course for anyone who can read music and play an instrument. The 1-credit course is repeatable every semester for credit.

Once a week, we meet in Kupa’a 104 for two hours of sight-reading, improvising, and discussing what and where we’re going to perform next.

Read about the first performance on February 22nd in Heona Building on the last day of 2015 Maui Open Studios.

Although it’s been described in the general course catalog for many years, it has never been offered for various reasons, including budget for instruments. The UHCC Part-Time Student Initiatives has now awarded UHMC for the proposal “Instrumental Ensemble for a Sustainable Learning Community” which will help set-up this course in Spring 2015.

Unlike the traditional orchestra or ensemble where the artistic director or conductor decides on the music program and then looks to fill each instrument, this course will custom-tailor to those instrumentalists that register and come to class.

We will be exploring repertoire in different genres and have the opportunity to play with visiting artists. The UHCC grant also includes budget to collaborate with artists in UHMC’s art classes as well as sustainability for the Annual Earth Day Jam on April 22nd, 2015.
