Open Mic And Songwriting Contest A Huge Success!

Last night the UHMC Music Club hosted the final Open Mic of the spring 2016 semester. It was followed by a songwriting contest co-sponsored by Music Studies @ UHMC and the Hawai‘i Songwriting Festival. There was a plethora of talent on display, and the winner was Jacob Trevino, who performed this composition “This Is My Life.” Jacob won a scholarship to the Hawai‘i Songwriting Festival for his outstanding work. Judges for the contest were Maui-based rock singer/songwriter Stef Mariani and Hapa’s bass player/singer/songwriter Tarvin Mākia.

Congratulations and mahalo to all of the contestants, and everyone else who showed up to support the event!

Fall 2016 Music Classes Posted; Registration Begins April 11, 2016!

If you’ve ever wanted to learn to play an instrument, sing, learn how to record your music, or just learn more about our musical world and the many cultures that create it, enroll at UH Maui College and take a music class (or two or three!)

We have posted a .pdf document comtaining the schedule of music classes that will be offered in the Fall 2016 semester. Please note that early registration for Fall 2016 classes will begin on Monday, April 11, 2016. If you have any questions regarding our music offerings, please contact Dr. Keola Donaghy.

UHMC Music Club To Host Open Mic and Songwriting Contest: Wednesday, April 13, 2016

Love to sing, play an instrument, slam poetry, do magic tricks, stand-up comedy, karaoke, act, dance – hula? Come perform (or just watch) at The Music Club of University of Hawaii – Maui College open mic on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 5 – 8 pm, Student Lounge. UHMC students, staff and faculty are invited along with the entire Maui community. All talents, All ages. Free admission and food. Please bring food to share. This is a family event and all kinds of talent found in Maui. “So many open mics are just for music, held late at night and is not for family.” says Karyn Sarring faculty advisor to the Music Club. “This is the fourth year of hosting open mics where people come with their families. We wanted to showcase all the different talents in our community. Also, all our music performance classes participate including the Institute of Hawaiian Music students and guest performers too!”

In addition to the Open Mic, the Music Club, in conjunction with the Hawai‘i Songwriting Festival, will hold a songwriting contest from 7-9 PM that will follow the Open Mic. The winner of this contest will receive a scholarship to the 2016 Hawai‘i Songwriting Festival, to be held on Hawai‘i island from June 16-18, 2016. “The Hawai‘i Songwriter’s Festival brings internationally-known songwriters, recording artists, music publishers and music supervisors for TV shows and movies to Hawai‘i to help aspiring songwriters and recording artists make valuable contacts in the recording industry,” said Dr. Keola Donaghy, faculty coordinator of Music Studies at UHMC. “Many previous attendees of this event and its predecessor, the Kauai Music Festival, have had their music place in TV, movies, and commercials, and received publishing contracts.” Donaghy noted that […]

Music Recitals on 10/28/15

They say that things come in threes. On Wednesday, October 28th 2015, music lecturer Karyn Sarring’s students will present three music recitals in Kūpa‘a 104. At 10:30am, piano students will perform, at noon, beginning voice students, and at 1:30pm, intermediate voice students. Drop in for one or stay for all three! There will be solo, duets and ensemble pieces, originals and an acapella version of “Uptown Funk”, music from Rent, John Legend, Black Keys, Amazing Grace, Mozart Beethoven, Chopin, and more. Aloha Maui Music Festival, April 18, 2015, Maui Nui Botanical Gardens

The Institute of Hawaiian Music presents a celebration of the music of Maui for the entire ‘ohana. The theme of this year’s inaugural ALOHA MAUI MUSIC FESTIVAL is “Aloha ‘Ia Nō ‘O Maui” (Maui is truly beloved). Entertainers include Mailani, Kenneth Makuakāne, George Kahumoku, Nā Wai ‘Ehā, hālau Pā‘ū O Hi‘iaka (under the direction of Kumu Hula Hōkulani Holt) and the students of the Institute of Hawaiian Music at UH Maui College. Hawaiian food, arts, crafts and other merchandise will be available for purchase, and there will be activities for the keiki. Proceeds from this event will provide scholarships to students, and support the many educational activities of the Institute of Hawaiian Music.
