About this event:
Virtuoso guitarists Ian O’Sullivan, Christopher Mallett, and Aaron Cardenas will give a concert of solo and duet music for classical guitar and ukulele for the public at UHMC’s ‘Ike Le‘a Lecture Hall on Friday July 10 at 3 pm. A reception follows at 4 pm for the audience to speak to the artists. No reservations required.
This concert is a special event in the week-long guitar master class of Benjamin Vendery, the renowned American guitarist and chair of the guitar department at the Yale School of Music. All three guitarists are students of Mr. Verdery, either on Maui, at Yale, or both.
This year marks the 16th year that Mr. Verdery has held a guitar master class on Maui. Over that time, over 125 guitarists have come from across the United States and around the world to Maui to study with Mr. Verdery, many of them returning several times. The class includes one-on-one instruction not only with Mr. Verdery but also with world-famous guest teachers, including this year Andrew York, Grammy–winning guitarist and composer who performed for 16 years with the acclaimed Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. The class also includes the performance of ensemble music, with the 20 guitarists in the class performing as a guitar orchestra. Each year, the orchestra performs at least one piece of music written by a Hawaiian composer. This year, they will also perform pieces written by Mr. Verdery and Mr. York.
