Adult Residential Care Home Operator Certificate

13 ARCH: Helping Therapies & Behavior Management

Prepares the adult residential care home operator to assist in the provision of occupational, physical, recreational, and diversional therapy. Identifies the operator’s role in fostering mental health and care of the mentally ill and mentally retarded. 1cr., 1hr. lect.

14 ARCH: Regulations, Accounts, Community Resources
Recommended prereq or coreq: NURS 16.
Prepares the adult residential care home operator to implement specified regulations of Chapter 100, prepare simple accounting records, and identify community resources available to resident operators. 1cr., 1hr. lect.

Eldercare Certificate

15 Eldercare/Personal Care Attendant
Prereq: Placement at Basic English level or higher; age 18 or older. Coreq: Enrollment in Basic English class if placement at Basic English level.
Prepares entry-level personal care attendant to assist the elderly, ill, or disabled in home, assisted living, or day health settings. Teaches basic personal care, simple nursing procedures, basic emotional support, and communication skills with clients, families, and staff. (Letter grade only.) Nurse Aide Training Certificate

16 Nurse Aide Training
Prereq: Placement at ENG 22 or higher.
Introduces nursing care for semi-acute or convalescent clients in the hospital and/or long-term care setting. Upon completion of the course, nurse aides work under supervision of a registered or practical nurse. Career Ladder Practical and Associate Degree Nursing

153 Nursing Concepts & Skills
Prereq: Admission to Nursing program. Coreq: NURS 153L.
Introduces the student to basic concepts and skills necessary for the nurse to implement the nursing process to support client/family reaction to stressors. Introduces knowledge and skills in the following areas: safety, asepsis, communication in older adults; nutrition, fluids, and elimination; pharmacology; peri-operative nursing; problems relating to regulatory mechanisms (exemplified by diabetes mellitus). 261 Advanced Electro-Cardiogram Interpretation

262 Gerontological Nursing: A TeleHealth and Community-Based Perspective

262L Gerontological Nursing: A TeleHealth & Community Based Perspective Lab
Prereq: NURS 262 (or concurrent), and placement at ENG 100, or consent.
Applies nursing process in care of geriatric clients in varied community based settings: long term care, home care, and ambulatory care. Tele-health and tale-nursing interventions applied to the care of the elderly in community settings will be stressed. 1cr., 3hr. lab

263 Advanced Cardio-Pulmonary Theory
Prereq: NURS 257 (or concurrent), or licensed RN or LPN with consent.
Develops advanced nursing theory related to the support of significant others and the care for clients with cardiopulmonary adaptations. Focuses on anatomy, physiology and physical assessment of the cardiac and respiratory systems. Applies the nursing process to specific cardiac and respiratory disorders. 3cr., 3hr. lect.

290 Advanced Topics in Nursing

Allied Health — Nursing

Under the umbrella of the Nursing program are a number of allied health programs enabling individuals to gain the education and training needed to gain entry to various nursing-related professions. Grades of C or better are required in all courses for a certificate or degree from the nursing/allied health program, unless stipulated otherwise.

Requirements for Certificates of Competence (Cert.Co.)

Nurse Aide Training (NAT): 5 credits

Prepares individuals to work in hospitals, extended care facilities, private nursing agencies, and home health agencies under supervision of an LPN or RN.

Nursing 16(5) Nurse Aide Training takes one semester.

There is no selection process for Nurse Aide Training. Graduates are eligible to take the Omnibus Reconciliation

Prerequisite: Placement at English 22. Act Examination given by American Red Cross.

Adult Residential Care Home Operator (ARCH): 3 credits
Nursing 12(1), 13(1), 14(1)

Prepares individuals to apply for certification to operate a Care Home in the State of Hawai`i.

Three 5-week courses offered during one semester.

Elder Care/Personal Care Attendant: 4 credits
Nursing 15(4)

Prepares individuals to provide basic care for patients in their home or community-based setting such as an assisted-living facility or day care center.

Prerequisite: 18 years or older; and placement at Basic English, or higher. Students with Basic English placement must enroll concurrently in Maui Language Institute or in Basic English courses.
Note.— This Cert.Co. does not prepare individuals for the Nurse Aide certification exam; instead see Nurse Aide Training Cert.Co.

Medication Assistant: 3 credits
Pharmacology 103(1), 104(1), 105(1)

Prepares individuals to work in assisted living and community-based settings.

Three 5-week courses offered during one semester.
Prerequisite: BIOL 100 with grade C or better, or consent. Recommended: NURS 16 with grade C or better.

Nursing Career Ladder (PRACN, ANURS)

The Nursing Career Ladder continues preparation for two higher levels of competency: Practical Nurse and Registered Nurse. The Nursing Career Ladder program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. (61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006) and the Hawai`i State Board of Nursing, and articulates with the University of Hawai`i Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. The conceptual framework and curriculum are based on the Betty Neuman Systems Model.

Licensed Practical Nurses are prepared to work under supervision of a registered nurse or a physician in hospitals, extended care facilities, private nursing agencies, home health agencies, clinics, and physician offices. Application for admission to the Practical Nurse (PN) program must be complete by January 31. Preference is given to fully qualified Maui County residents who meet the application deadline. Practical Nurse courses take one calendar year. Graduates are eligible to take the National Council of State Boards of Nursing-Practical Nursing Examination.

Registered Nurses with the Associate degree are prepared for beginning level positions in hospitals, extended care facilities, clinics, physician offices, private nursing agencies, and home health agencies.

Application for admission to the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program must be complete by January 31. Preference is given to fully qualified Maui County residents who meet the application deadline.

MATH 22 or MATH 23 (recommended) or higher with grade C or better and Nursing 157 & 157L with grades of B or better are required before admission to the ADN program. Practical Nurse licensure or passing the NCLEX-PN is required for continuation in the ADN program. MCC Practical Nurse graduates who do not continue directly into the ADN level as well as Licensed Practical Nurses who did not graduate from the MCC Career Ladder program are considered for admission to the ADN level. They must complete summer session transition courses (Nursing 157 and 157L) at MCC the summer before entering the ADN program. ADN graduates are eligible to take the National Council of State Boards of Nursing - Registered Nursing Examination.

PN & ADN Admission Process

For admission to the Maui Community College PN or ADN program, complete all the steps outlined below by January 31. Admission to MCC does not guarantee admission to a Nursing program. Admission to PN or ADN is a separate process. Per UH Board of Regents policy, priority is given to State of Hawaii residents for admission to high-demand programs (PN and ADN). (See Definition of Residency in section on Admission & Registration).

Selection is competitive, based on grades in the required courses as follows: ZOOL 141, ZOOL142, PSYCH 100, PSYCH 240, ENG 100, ANTHRO 200, MICRO 130, MATH 22 or 23, Communications elective, and Humanities elective. Other criteria include: Nurses Aide Training, experience in health care, National League for Nursing test scores, and references.

Students are preliminarily selected by March 31 for the subsequent Fall term from applicants who have met all admission criteria. A letter of acceptance or non-acceptance is sent to each applicant by April 30. Those not selected for the class of their choice will be assisted in correcting deficiencies.
