Name: Edwin Calaro
Age: 29
Birthplace: Maui
Prior Occupation: National Guard
Why nursing? After leaving the National Guard as a medic, my father
became ill. Everyday I would talk to his nurses and found I was more interested
in the field of nursing than the accounting classes I was taking. I learned
that in nursing, every day is different, exciting and there's always something
new to learn. After graduating from nursing, I planned on working at Hale
Makua for 6 months before moving on... I've been there, now for 5 years.
I even met my wife working there and we decided to get married there,
too. Now my time off is spent shopping with my beautiful daughter.

Name: John Campos
Age: 36
Birthplace: Wailuku, HI
Prior Occupation: Construction
Why nursing? As a meteorologist student at UH, I would drive my
roomate to/from his nursing clinicals. Curious about what he did, I witnessed
caring for people, a love for life while helping others. I discovered
that nursing is not based on your gender. Nursing gives you the chance
to change someone's day, simply by making them smile.

Name: Tom Jezierny
Age: 58
Birthplace: Chicago, Illinois
Prior Occupation: Business Management
Why nursing? I was planning to retire from management around the
time a couple of friends were hospitalized in critical condition. During
my visits, I observed and had conversations with their nurses, one, a
male nurse in his 50's. It became obvious to me that nursing would be
a rewarding and great opportunity as a second career. My friends passed
away and I wonder if they were my inspiration to become a nurse; their
final gift to me one might say.

Name: Paul Harper
Age: 32
Home Town: Wichita, Kansas
Prior Occupation: Waiter
Why nursing? I was originally looking to go into the field of social
work. A friend of mine (who knows me pretty well) thought I would be a
good nurse instead. I remember in the past, seeing a lot of confusion
going on while visiting family or friends in the hospital. I thought why
isn't there someone who could translate the medical jargon to the layman.
I knew I enjoyed helping people, but I was concerned about fulfilling
the scientific prerequisites to get into nursing. Guess what, when I started
taking the courses, I found that technical stuff was a natural fit for
me.

Why nursing? Medics in top physical shape can still get injured
and be out of work. Nursing is flexible and secure. There are many specialties
you can choose from despite physical limitations. Also, as a single parent
I am able to spend time with my three wonderful daughters. A career in
nursing allows me to support my family without worry.
