OCEANIA CONFERENCE

OCEANIA, the local chapter of the National Marine Educator's Association, will host a special conference session in conjunction with the Hawaii Science Teacher's Association (HaSTA) conference on Saturday October 2nd, 2010. The OCEANIA conference will begin at 12:30 pm with a hosted lunch followed by presentations by OCEANIA members. Presentations will be 15 minutes in length and span a variety of topics from ocean literacy, teaching science as inquiry, marine debris, and Waikiki reef watch. Come reconnect with fellow teachers, researchers, and community members and learn about what is happening in Hawaii's marine science community! Pau at 4pm.

NOAA Ocean Exploration Curriculum Workshop and Marine
Educators Night
Saturday Sept 25, Honolulu

Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology     9:00am to 3:00pm

Bring the excitement of modern day explorers to your classroom through NOAA Ocean Explorers' website and curriculum - focusing on explorations into extreme environments. The Learning Ocean Sciences through Ocean Exploration Grades 6-12 curricula includes sections on incredible deep-sea creatures, ocean exploration, geology, currents, human impacts and more. Prior workshop particpants are invited to attend a special session tailored to their needs and receive a $100 stipend for completing the 2 workshop cycle. ALL participants receive a full teaching materials packet. Stipends to cover travel costs from neighbor islands will be provided.

Waikiki Aquarium      6:00pm to 8:30pm

Explore the Aquarium while discovering new education resources and old friends. NOAA's Ocean Explorer website, research and curricula will be highlighted, as well as the many recources available to educators to support marine curricula. Representatives from state and federal organizations will be there with tables of instructional materials. Refreshments will be provided. Collect complimentary teaching materials and great door prizes! The evening is free for educators and a guest.
The Coconut Island workshop and the evening at the Aquarium are both sponsored by NOAA's Ocean Explorer program and the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation.
