"I Saw It In The Paper" - Publicity Strategies and Skills for Non-Profit Organizations

Why do some organizations get such good news coverage and others don't? What makes something "newsworthy"? How can you maximize the chances of getting a story in the paper or on the radio? This course will answer these questions and teach you the basic skills needed to successfully publicize the activities of your group or organization. You'll learn to write a press release, photo caption and public service announcement, how to "pitch" a story or stage a media event. You'll also get a "starter" press list and learn to identify the audience( s) for the information you want to disseminate. The course is designed especially for volunteers or professionals working for non-profit agencies or groups, but is open to anyone. Jackie Brainard has 20 years of public relations experience in the competitive Los Angeles media market. She represented clients in entertainment, business, government and politics as well as non-profit organizations. She currently uses her talents to promote her favorite Maui non-profits.
