Academic Support Specialist: Jaymie Kanani Moniz

The Director – Kari Luna Nunokawa

Aloha! My name is Kari Luna Nunokawa and I am the Director of Pai Ka Mana, Student Support Services Program. I grew up in Wailuku and attended Wailuku Elementary, Iao Intermediate, and H.P. Baldwin High School. After finishing high school, I attended the University of Washington in Seattle. I earned a Bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in Classics and Ancient History. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience in the Pacific Northwest, however Hawai‘i was definitely calling me back. When I came home, I realized that I needed a higher degree if I wanted to be able to provide a comfortable home for myself and future family. In 2002, I graduated from Chaminade University with a Master’s of Science in Counseling Psychology degree. I began my counseling career at Mililani High School and learned the practicality of the profession and gained invaluable experience from working with the students and their families. Due to a sudden life change, I decided to move back home to Maui. For 3 ½ years, I worked at Maui High School as a teacher, counselor, and Professional Learning Community Coordinator. In October 2007, I learned of a wonderful opportunity at University of Hawaii Maui College for the directorship of the Student Support Services Program. I knew this position would be a perfect fit because it combines all the expertise and knowledge I gained in school and in the field.  While in this position, I also finished my educational journey.  In May 2012, I graduated from the University of Southern California with my Doctorate of Education.

Personally, I am married to Craig Nunokawa and we have two children; a girl, Ho‘ohieokala (“Hie” for short) and a boy, Noah. Hie is 12 years old and enjoys gymnastics, tennis, and hula.  Noah is 5 and very rambunctious.  He is still figuring out what he likes to do besides putting everything in his mouth.  You will be able to meet both of them soon as they will definitely be at many of our SSSP functions. In my spare time, I am involved in the local political scene and doing volunteer charity work around Maui County.  My passion is dancing hula, which I have been doing since I was 7 years old.  I also coach tennis for Baldwin High School and the Wailuku Junior Tennis Club.
