Your Future is Our Goal

What is Ku’ina?
We’re a county Youth program operated by Maui Community College.  Our job is to guide, train and support students who don’t have the money, skills or opportunity to meet their educational and career goals.

How we can help.
We work one-on-one with you to come up with an overall plan to break the hardship cycle and get back on a positive track.  We offer financial support and educational options.  Most importantly, we help you learn to make your own decision so you have power over your own future.

  • Paid and unpaid work experience
  • Job Training
  • Leadership development
  • Adult mentoring
  • Computer Training

What is different about this than other stuff you have heard before?
Ku’ina is directly connected to Maui Community College.  We have a working program, dedicated staff and state funding to help students get past their immediate problems and onto a career and a better life.  So if you’ve ever dreamed about studying and training on a college campus, this is your big chance.

Who is eligible?
You need to be between the ages of 14 and 21 and meet specifically family income guidelines.  You must also fall into one or more of the following categories:

  • School dropout
  • Homeless, runaway or foster child
  • Pregnant or parenting
  • Youth offender
  • Require assistance to complete an education program (High School diploma/ General Education Development (GED), Certificate/Degree in post-secondary education or advance training program)
  • Require assistance to secure or hold a job
  • Below 8th grade reading and math level

Priority is given to students who is in the age of 16-21 and defined as an Out-of-School who is

    • a High School Dropout or
    • has a High School Diploma/GED AND has one of the following
      • basic skills deficient (scores below an 8th grade reading and math level) and/or
      • Unemployed and/or
      • Underemployed

 

Maybe you’re having a hard time staying in school.  Maybe you need to support the family but can’t find a job.  Or maybe you just want someone who understands for a change.
We hear you.

At Ku’ina, we not only make it a point to understand your problems but we can also help work out realistic solutions; finish school, get financial support, train for a career find a decent job.  If you want to start improving your life, it begins right here.

Is there a catch?
No catch.  No pressure.
The counseling, financial aid and job placement are free to all participants.
