The Student Martial Arts Club at UH Maui College invites everyone to a Self-Defense Workshop, the club’s first fundraiser this year on Wednesday, Sept. 27 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the campus Great Lawn.
The session features guest instructor Master John Ramos, who is flying in from San Diego to facilitate the workshop.
Ramos grew up in upper Paia in the 1960’s and studied Judo and Jujitsu from his father at their family dojo. He moved to San Francisco and attended college at Chico State University where he was a competitive collegiate wrestler. Following his college years, Master Ramos studied many of the different forms of martial arts including Judo, Jujitsu, Wing Chun, Tae Kwon Do, and Escrima. In 2010, Master Ramos developed a for credit “Self Defense for Women” course for San Diego State University’s Exercise and Nutritional Science Department and has been facilitating that course each semester since. He also taught Judo, Jujitsu and Tae Kwon Do for San Diego State University.
The workshop will cover avoidance, mitigation and basic bio-mechanics of self-defense. Attendees don’t need prior experience to martial arts, but are requested to be in comfortable clothes. The event is free and open to the public, but donations at $10 and $25 are appreciated.
