Spring 2015 Learning Skills Events and Workshops

The Learning Center offers a wide range of practical study skills and individual skills that can help you in your classes. All study-skills workshops are free to attend and reservations are not needed, however seating is limited. Students will have an opportunity to develop skills that are essential for academic success.

Learning Skills 110 Workshops

LSK 110 Workshops are held on Wednesdays from 3:00 to 4:00 pm at The Learning Center

Laulima for Students

  • January 21, 2015 at 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Helps students learn how to manage Laulima, the College’s online learning environment. Many of your courses will use Laulima, but you can use Laulima as a tool regardless if the courses you are taking require it.

Organizing Your Time

  • January 28, 2015 at 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Helps students examine how they spend (and waste) time. Discusses methods for setting and reaching goals, and organizing. Shows students how to set up a successful study schedule and focuses on why students procrastinate and how to conquer that bad habit!

Taking Better Lecture Notes

  • February 4, 2015 at 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Discusses several common note-taking mistakes and provides techniques for recording, organizing, and reviewing important information given during a lecture.

How the Brain Learns

  • February 11, 2015 at 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Understand how the brain learns so you can focus on strategies that increase learning.

Great Ways to Study

  • February 18, 2015 at 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Focuses on basic study techniques, focusing on several textbook reading and study methods. Covers textbook study methods such as “reducing” and highlighting and discusses the best ways to use/review flash cards, etc.

Stress Management

  • February 25, 2015 at 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Learn ways to manage stress and reduce anxiety.

How to Stay Motivated

  • March 4, 2015 at 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Learn strategies to stay focused and motivated.

Stop Procrastinating

  • March 11, 2015 at 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Learn strategies to overcome procrastination habits and manage boredom.

Predicting Test Questions

  • March 18, 2015 at 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Teaches several methods designed to help students create their own practice quizzes in order to prepare more effectively for upcoming tests.

Preparing for Exam

  • April 1, 2015 at 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Learn some general test-taking strategies. Illustrates important study principles and discusses how to spend the last few days before a test studying in the most effective ways.

Test Taking Skills

  • April 8, 2015 at 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Reviews general test-taking strategies. Helps students learn how to budget their time on tests, read multiple-choice questions, and deal with lack/loss of confidence during a test.

Grammar Workshops

All Grammar Workshops are held on Thursdays at 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm at The Learning Center

Teaches students how to identify and edit common grammatical errors including Fragments, Run-Ons and Comma Splices, Subject-Verb Agreement, Pronoun -Antecedent Agreement, Verb Problems, Misplaced and Dangling Modifiers, Parallelism, Commas, Colons and Semicolons.
