Certificate of Completion (22-credit)

The 22-credit Early Childhood Certificate of Completion along with a two year degree fulfills preschool teacher qualification requirements in Hawai’i. All courses in the certificate are included in the AS degree in Early Childhood Education. 3.2 GPA required in courses taken for the certificate.

Early Childhood Education Certificate of Completion (22 credits)

ED 105 – Introduction to Early Childhood Education (3 credits)

    Prerequisites: ENG 19 with grade C or better, or placement at least ENG 22, or consent.

ED 110 – Developmentally Appropriate Practices (3 credits)

    Prerequisites: ENG 19 with grade C or better, or placement at least ENG 22, or consent.

ED 131 – Early Childhood Development: Theory into Practice (3 credits)

    Prerequisites: ENG 22 or placement at ENG 100, or consent.

ED 140/FAMR 140 – Guidance of Children in Groups (3 credits)

    Prerequisites: ED 131, or consent.

ED 245/FAMR 235 WI (Writing Intensive) – Child, Family, Community (3 credits)

    Prerequisites: ENG 22 or placement at ENG 100, or consent.

ED 190 OR ED 191V – Early Childhood Field Experience IA (190) or IB (191V) (4 credits)

    Prerequisites for 190: Permission of instructor; and ED 110 and ED 131 both with grade C or better, and ENG 22 or placement at ENG 100. Recommended: ED 105. Note: Students may be required to obtain a physical or doctor’s note and to be fingerprinted,all the student’s expense.
    Prerequisites for 191V: Permission of instructor; and ED 110 and ED 131 both with grade C or better, and ENG 22 or placement at ENG 100. For Preschool CDA candidates, Preschool CDA Certificate of Competence required. Recommended: ED 105. Note: Students may be required to obtain a physical or doctor’s note and to be fingerprinted,all the student’s expense.

ED 291V – Early Childhood Field Experience II (3 credits counted for Certificate – most students need to take it for 4 credits)

    Prereq: Permission of instructor; and ED 105, ED/FAMR 140, ED 190/191v, and ED 245/FAMR 235. Coreq: ED 263 or 264. Recommended: ED 115. Note: Students may be required to obtain a physical or doctor’s note and to be fingerprinted, all at student’s expense.
