Coral reefs are one of our most important ecosystems. And they’re in trouble. You’ll be introduced to the biology, ecology, and geology of stony corals and the reef structures they build. You’ll also learn to identify the roles of other members of the coral reef community including algae, other invertebrates, and fishes. Learn the fundamentals of designing, operating and maintaining backyard and commercial scale aquaponics systems with locally sourced inputs of fish, fish feed and plants using new technologies and growing techniques. Students will have on-demand access to an online course featuring 80 hours of training modules and weekly Zoom sessions with their instructor. Introduction To Plant Propagation

This course will provide the student an overview on plant propagation. Included will be seed/sexual propagation and asexual propagation (cuttings, divisions, air layers, etc.). This course will provided both a lecture of the various techniques as well as hands on practical exercises. This should make possible, for the student, both small scale (home owner) and large scale nursery enterprises . Course will be conducted at Ho'oulu 104 and Greenhouse facilities.

The ABC's of Bees: Basic Beekeeping Part B

Part B Working with the hive and harvesting honey. This is the second in a series Four, 5 hour, non credit courses (A, B, C and D) to provide the student introductory information on keeping bees in Hawaii. In Part B. Student will understand the inner workings of a bee hive, including: what the internal parts are, where the bees live and reproduce. Students will also learn basic working with bees and hive manipulations. Students will learn techniques to harvest honey. This will be then followed by: Part C, construction of hives, assembling woodenware/equipment.

Part C, construction of hives, assembling woodenware/equipment. This is the third in a series four, 5 hour, non credit courses (A, B, C and D) to provide the student introductory information on keeping bees in Hawaii. In Part C. Students will learn to build hives from locally obtained materials. Students will also learn to assemble woodenware/equipment that can not be locally sourced from hardware stores.

The ABC's of Bees: Basic Beekeeping Part D

The answer to: How do you get bees? Of course you could buy a hive @ about $200+ if you can find someone selling. This class will look at the factors affecting honey bees in the spring-summer months of the year and what will cause a hive to swarm. How to collect a swarm will be covered as well as attracting swarms. If Time permits situation allows we will collect swarm, service swarm traps, or transfer swarm to hive. Students should have had ABC's of Beekeeping A, B and C or AG162 Introductory Beekeeping.

What is Bugging you? Home Garden Pest Control Overview

This course is geared to the home gardener, just starting out, with questions regarding insect pest identification. This course will cover tools/resources for quick identification of the primary insect pests that affect the various crops or ornamental plants that people grow here in Hawaii. This course will also identify beneficial insects and their roles in mitigating insect pest problems. Course will include lecture, demonstrations, and walk about to introduce students to the common pests in the landscape. Time in class will include work with microscopes to observe and assist in identification. Course will also include some information regarding pesticide use, pesticide label interpretation, and pesticide safety.

A 6-week introduction to the basics of wheel throwing. Over the 6-week course, students may use up to 25 pounds of clay and will meet once a week for 4-hour class sessions. The fundamentals of throwing, trimming, decorating, and glazing ceramic pieces will be covered.

A 6-week opportunity for intermediate or advanced students to use studio space for either throwing on the wheel or hand-building techniques. No instruction will be provided, so applicants must have recent pottery experience and be comfortable working independently. Over the 6-week open studio span, students may use up to 25 pounds of clay and will meet once a week for 4-hour open studio sessions.

If you are already familiar with the basics of your camera (film or digital) and feel comfortable shooting in the Manual setting, this hands-on photography workshop will help you to "see" more creatively. Personal Trainer and ACE Industry Certification Prep is designed to prepare students for the entry level positions in the field of Fitness and Personal Training.

Through a combination of theoretical instruction and practical application, students will gain a thorough understanding of exercise science, anatomy, testing and training program design principles. The program covers essential topics such as client screening and assessment, exercise physiology, injury prevention, and safe and effective exercise programming for various populations.

Practical assignments will allow students to develop their physical skills. The MLI Regular Session builds and improves English skills in listening, speaking, reading, vocabulary, writing, and cultural studies. You will learn and practice grammatical structures through practice exercises and presentations. You will research and present on cultural topics, through rhetorical techniques that include describing, comparing and contrasting, exploring causes and effects, and argumentation. You will build writing skills from writing paragraphs to essays. Depending on the module, you will write descriptions, processes, compare/contrast, problem/solution, and/or cause and effect paragraphs and essays. You will build skills required to become independent readers and thinkers in the English language.

In this intermediate course, students will learn to apply communication skills in American Sign Language (ASL) based on previous training. The course will focus on observing expressive and receptive skills through the use of hand signage. Students will be introduced to members of the deaf and hard of hearing community to practice acquired language skills in social settings. All students are welcome but, the instructor is strongly suggests taking LANG6709 Introduction to ASL prior to this intermediate class.

Surface Design and Pattern in Textile

Are there ideas you have always wanted to develop but don't know how? Do you think some fabric patterns can be drab? Have you ever wanted to create your own colorful clothing fabric patterns? Surface Design and Pattern is any type of artwork (pattern, illustration, hand lettering, etc.) made by a designer that is intended to be applied to a surface to enhance its visual appearance and/or functionality. In this class, you will learn to create basic designs and patterns to start publishing textiles or artwork. Your instructor will take you through the process of using a simple iPad app and guide you to add drawings, color, texture, and transition elements for your own unique patterns.  Note: Designs will be conducted on your required personal Apple iPad using the Apple Pen with the Procreate app.

Tai Chi (Yang Style): Meditation and Martial Arts

It's known by many names but whether you are just starting to explore Tai Chi, Qigong, or Tai Qi, or have been practicing for years, this course has no requirements nor necessary equipment. All are welcome. As people all over the world have discovered, Tai Chi is a powerful and natural way to address health conditions, stimulate inner healing, and live a happy, healthy life. Sifu Dan Takamura and his Instructors will be leading our Martial Arts classes. We offer students 90-minute sessions (on Wednesdays and Saturdays starting 2024). Tao Style Kung Fu for Self-Defense

Sifu Dan Takamura offers Taichi classes for health and wellness and Kung Fu classes for Self-defense while learning internal and external power for cardio and fitness. Part of the Maui Chinese Martial Academy for over 25 years, he has done Lion Dances, Kung Fu, and Tai Chi performances.  Tao style was known for its mystical and spiritual side of Kung Fu. Instructors will teach you how to utilize your internal and external strengths and increase your spiritual power. Individuals will have the opportunity to learn a one-of-a-kind martial art. Beginners will learn eight steps, six blocks, and basic five elemental sets and as they improve they will learn other more advanced forms. All students must complete a UHMC Liability Waiver Form before partaking in our fitness classes. Please bring water and a towel if necessary, comfortable clothing and shoes are recommended
