“Hāloanakalaukapalili” by Anne Steinke and Kamoana (James) Spencer

“Hāloanakalaukapalili” by Anne Steinke and Kamoana (James) Spencer
November 5, 2017 Nā Leo Literary Review

Title: Hāloanakalaukapalili
Artists: Anne Steinke and Kamoana (James) Spencer
Medium: Mixed Media Sculpture.
Message from the artists: “This mixed media sculpture represents Kanaka’s connection to the Kalo and the symbiotic relationship between the Hawai’ian staple and it’s people as expressed through a portion of the creation mo`olelo of Papa and Wākea, where Wākea and Hoʻohōkūkalani bring forth Hāloanakalaukapalili the first kalo, then his brother Haloa, the first Kanaka.”

“The words found around the leaves of the piece reflect the nurturing and provision that must go into the raising of the kalo for the sustenance to be provided both literally and figuratively. They tell of how higher education combined with culture ensures a sustainable future for our community through the process of good stewardship, and the responsibility of investment in ourselves to benefit our legacy, the younger generations.”
