“Kū i ka māna” by Kili’ohu Thomas
November 8, 2017 Nā Leo Literary Review

Title: “Kū i ka māna”
Artist: Kili’ohu Thomas
Medium: Digital Media
Note from the artist: Kū i ka māna is a poetic proverb from the book ‘Ölelo No’eau by Mary Kawena Pukui, # 1875. This proberb refers to the relationship between makua and keiki and how knowledge is passed on from one generation to the next. In my piece the background is a photo from Kilo looking towards the peninsula of Ke’anae, where my family has resided for generations. The hands are depicting a makua holding the hand of the keiki knowing that where ever they go, the makua will always be there. The design in the corner is my insignia and is on all my artwork.
