WE ARE PENNIES
By Julius Ibarra
We are pennies,
Clad in cheap zinc—
Billions upon billions,
But only worth one.
We all could add up,
Billions of dollars’ worth.
However,
We tend to be alone.
We are pennies,
Hiding in each other’s pockets,
Only used when needed and convenient—
Another penny to be lost in the wash.
We are pennies,
Seemingly irrelevant,
Unseen and unneeded.
But one million starts
With one.
