Hey,

Past me

Do you remember

That one Christmas

When they kept screaming

And the tree fell

When a knife was thrown

And blood was drawn

Hey,

Do you remember

When we grew scared of asking questions

I think it was around December

We were terrified

Of the screaming

And we started to believe

That we didn’t matter

Hey,

Do you remember

When “Family” became “Strangers”

We grew distant

Quiet

We always smiled though

To try and hide the fear

Hey,

Do you remember

That beautiful, red bird

Who wanted to be blue

He tried to change his colours

But,

Fear

Ruined that too

So he hid who he wanted to be

Behind smiles

That reached from ear to ear

And never spoke a word

No matter the tears

Hey,

Do you remember

Because I do

I also remember the time

We met our best friend

As clear as the morning dew

I remember

When we fell in love

Unrequited it might’ve been

But it was still so beautiful

So warm

Those feelings we felt deep within

I remember

The day we made our home

In a small room

Filled with laughter and

Joy

How we met another bird

Who was able to fly free

And the girl

Who understood me

I remember

Feeling down

Only to be picked back up

By people who I call

Family

Because

“Family doesn’t end in blood”

I remember

All these things

The good

And the bad

That make us who we are

Today

And

That isn’t so bad
