“Trapped” by Melinda Lee

“Trapped” by Melinda Lee
December 7, 2019 Nā Leo Literary Review

You cheer when I balance a ball on my nose

Or when you ride holding onto my fin.

I strike a pose

When the day begins.

I swim in this enclosed space going

Around in circles, knowing

I won’t be able to see

The clear blue water from the sea.

I am a dolphin trapped in this zoo

Here to give you a show.

I do my trick when given my cue,

Something I wish I could forgo.

If I may add,

I feel like a slave.

Don’t they know I am as sad

As raindrops falling on a grave.

When it is all quiet under the starry sky,

I dream of swimming in a pod.

When the sun is out I fly

Through a hoop to be applauded.
