“New Beginnings” by Sokha Furumoto

“New Beginnings” by Sokha Furumoto
April 14, 2020 Nā Leo Literary Review

Quietness in the still ocean

where the wind gently brushes past,

the comforting rustic scenery

patiently watches the fisherman

in the cool breeze of the morning.

For as long as I can remember

I have sat beside the still ocean every morning.

The day goes by slowly

with butterflies fluttering in my stomach.

The smell of the salty air

touches the rough sand against my toes.

Tomorrow I start a new day, new life, new purpose –

A new family takes me to a far away country.

My friends are no more,

the family I grew up with – just another memory.

My childhood is behind me.

I soon will meet my new parents.

I think to myself, am I going to a better place?

What will it be like? “I hope I make new friends.”

I sit beside the ocean again,

it is not the same.

I say goodbye to the fellow fishermen

who I watched every morning.

I feel the roughness of the sand against my toes and

the cool ocean breeze against my face.
