“Someone Like You” by Jamaica Aquino

“Someone Like You” by Jamaica Aquino
April 13, 2019 Nā Leo Literary Review

Your mouth runs like a race car on a highway

Surpassing its speed limit.

With no cops in sight, you take a sharp

U-turn, burning rubber and leaving skid marks.

Funny how your mind is never with you,

Like a dog that needs a leash.

When I’m walking along, I find it

Riding a cloud across the vast blue sky, or

Riding a wave current under the deep, deep sea.

It never seeks adventure, but adventure finds it

At the farthest corner of the darkest caves.

A ferocious flame lights within your eyes,

The flame of a wicked witch,

Devilish and seeking to devour someone,

Concealed behind your puppy-like eyes,

But mine pierce right through your layers.
