“Locks” by AT

“Locks” by AT
April 30, 2019 Nā Leo Literary Review

Look into a lock and you’ll find:

A sky painted gray.

And clouds that struggle to hold

Onto water they’ve been collecting.

A field will be there,

With a fire burning in the middle of it.

A fire of all our secrets,

If you will.

If you look close enough

You’ll see flames flaring up against each other,

In a competition to see who’s brighter.

Red,

Is a glass of whiskey

Filled to the brim with liquor

That is a little too strong.

Orange,

Is a pill that only brings confusion.

Yellow,

Is a “get well” card you forget to send.

All of these colors are intertwined.

Just like you and me.

Just like the things we keep within our locks.

Everything combined

Creates the perfect key.

But nothing stays locked in forever.

If you don’t stop fueling your fire,

You’ll see the flames start to burn too bright,

And the clouds above will start to cry,

The fire will extinguish,

One secret at a time.

You’ll hear the colors of the flames,

Finally laugh and sing,

As they seep through

The opening.

Finally the lock will open

And you will be faced with

A smirk from your secrets,

And they,

As well as the world,

Will watch as you scurry in fear.
