New Nā Leo Staff 2021!
March 1, 2021 Nā Leo Literary Review

Crystel Sundberg-Yannel

Faculty Advisor

What’s your favorite study music and why?
I honestly don’t listen to music when I study. Sometimes it ends up distracting me and prompts fun daydreams–which is fantastic in other situations and the reason why I listen to it while I’m writing. I love to escape into instrumental soundtracks–something epic and moving from a movie I enjoy. It gets all those emotions dancing and infuses itself into my writing. Daydreams are always welcome when writing!
Who is your literary or artistic Hero?
I have quite a few, but if I had to choose one, I’d have to choose Anne Frank. I found her work when I was older and now wish I’d stumbled across it in my teens. She’s so relatable and brilliant. Her writing is deeply honest and introspective–and surprisingly funny. She’s a hero to me in so many ways.
What are you looking for in student contributions?
I’d love to see writing that takes risks! Push those boundaries, play with text layout, tackle a topic with rich nuances, write about the mundane and show us how amazing it can be.
What inspires you to create?
I feel like my “normal” mode is always roaring to create… but then my anxiety or procrastination kicks in and it prevents me from making anything. Creating is invigorating and relaxing, and I think what inspires me to do it is simply the feel-good brain chemicals it releases. It’s a liberating and smile-inducing practice. I just need to remind myself to put the phone or video games–or whatever it is that’s distracting me–away. I’ve heard that having a small space that’s exclusively used for creating helps keep the distractions at bay. Goals for the New Year!

What’s your favorite study music and why? I listen to classical music or some type of piano music. I really feel it helps me to focus. I made it a habit, so when I put in on now it activates my mind to focus!

Who is your literary or artistic Hero? I really love Hawaiian artist name Keali’i Reichel. I love the way he creates poems (songs) using the Hawaiian language. His songs are deep and powerful, and really empowers me to connect with my Hawaiian roots in such a beautiful way.

What are you looking for in student contributions? I’m looking for deep, inspiring, profound, and hard hitting works! I would love students to create statement pieces that go beyond, that go deep.

What inspires you to create? I get inspired from people. I enjoy writing about the goodness that can be found if we look. I feel that drama is often a source of inspiration and thats great too, but I think we need to normalize being entertained by the good parts of life as well!

What’s your favorite study music and why? My favorite study of music is never concrete. It changes on the daily, sometimes hourly, with how I feel and how I want to feel. It usually tends to become any remixed pop music though. This is only because the high beats motivate me far more than any other genre of music.

Who is your literary or artistic Hero? I have no literary or artistic hero because of how much I love all kinds of literary or artistic work! I literally can not get too into one person’s work when I’m obsessed over everyone else’s too!

What are you looking for in student contributions? I look for the passion and thoughtfulness put in every contribution. This includes the time and effort put into the piece as well as the creativeness with every month’s theme.

What inspires you to create? Nature and my own experiences inspire me to create what I do. The vibrancy of design within nature is abundant and I love using it in my pieces.
