KAHULUI, Hawaii – Registration for the Early College program at University of Hawai‘i Maui College for the Fall 2018 semester begins next month. Qualified High School students wanting to earn college credits while still in High School can begin the process by contacting their respective High School counselors.
The Early College program allows High School students to take college courses and earn credits toward their high school graduation and college degree.
Kihei Charter High School senior Macaleigh Hendricks is an Early College program student who is on-track to graduate both High School and UH Maui College in May, with an associate’s degree in liberal arts. Hendricks started earning college credits two years ago and she will be the first to graduate from the program at UHMC.
“I was terrified because I didn’t know what to expect, I thought everyone was just going to assume I was less smart because I was only in High School,” Hendricks said. “But that wasn’t the case. I am thankful for all the knowledge that I’ve gained because the courses are more rigorous than High School classes and now it will be more affordable for me to continue my education and get a higher degree.”
“We’re proud of Macaleigh for her accomplishments,” said Kīhei Charter High School Early Admit Coordinator Tara Lindsey. “I always ask the students if they are committed and ready to take on the challenge, because only with hard work will they be rewarded in the end.”
Qualified students participate in the program at no cost, thanks to funding from the State Legislature and through private and federal grants. The program was established to help achieve the goal of 55 percent of Hawai`i’s working age adults having a college degree by 2025.
“In addition to earning college credits, students gain valuable experiences,” said UH Maui College Counselor Linda Fujitani. “It helps them transition from High School to college, and learn life skills, responsibilities, good study habits, and work ethics.”
Students interested in the Early College program should contact their High School counselors.
Early College eligible applicants can begin registration on April 23 for the Fall 2018 semester. For further information, contact UH Maui College Office of Admissions and Records at (808) 984-3267, or email email@example.com.
