Upward Bound

TRiO Upward Bound is an engaging educational program that prepares low-income first-generation high school students for college. The program consists of a summer and academic-year component for participants from Baldwin, Maui, and Molokai High Schools. In September 2017, UH Maui College was awarded a new grant serving students who attend Maui County’s outlying high schools. This new awarded program will also consists of a summer and academic-year component for participants from King Kekaulike, Lahainaluna, Hana and Lanai High Schools. Participants enter program during their early high school years and continue with the program until high school graduation. Upward Bound is sponsored by the University of Hawaii Maui College with funding provided by the U.S. Department of Education. The program is offered at no cost to parents or students. In October 2012, UH Maui College was awarded a new program, Upward Bound Math and Science. The program provides similar services to eligible participants with a focus on preparing students for entry into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) college programs.
We are in the process of recruiting new students. Currently, we are recruiting incoming 9th grade students who are attending one of the 7 Maui County high schools. Applications are currently being accepted and parent/student interviews will be set up for select students.

Academic Year
Upward Bound staff wants to ensure you meet your goal of attending college and care for your well-being. Staff is always open to listen, support, and assist in many additional ways to meet each student’s individual needs.
Tutoring
Tutoring is Mandatory! If you are receiving a C or lower in any core subject, Upward Bound requires you to receive tutoring support, either from Upward Bound or at your school.
Summer Component
The goal of the summer program is for students not only to prepare themselves academically for college, but to gain independent living skills and confidence to continue onto college after high school graduation. This unique experience can change student’s lives!
