“Exploring Thoughts of One’s Soul”
Ma Lilibeth “Mary” Donahue
November 2, 2017
Explore, explore. What is it for?
On the verge of my despair; something I could not prepare
Mournful life is unkind; so, as the gloomy side of mankind
Nothing’s right in the eyes of one’s sight
Damage of the past unrepairable and done
Like echoes of the souls, those that have gone
Explore, explore. What is it for?
Tussling for peace, only oneself can cease
A soft heart and cool breeze are what we seized
Explore, explore. What I explore?
In the ocean of tears, tears with colors suddenly went clear
No smell, no shades of colors, no difference I see
Only a rainbow, true colors we failed to adhere
Why can’t we see the harmony of the sea?
Let’s try rowing together, and find our way altogether
Keep calm on one same boat and let our hearts feel free
Clear our faults and let them burn; use our soul and let it learn
The farthest we row, the brightest our future will grow.
Note from the Author: This poem was inspired by Ta-Nehisi Coates’ article, “Letter to My Son,” that our professor gave us for annotation. After reading three pages of it, I felt emotional.
