Instructor Biographies

Alex de Roode Director of Business Development  Sustainability for Green Building Hawaii. He holds a Master of Science degree in Bioresource Engineering from McGill University, and is a LEED Accredited Professional with a specialty in Operations  Maintenance as well as a Certified Energy Manager (CEM).

Anne Gachuhi Horticulturalist with a B.S. from Egerton University, Kenya; M.S. from Wageningen Agricultural University, Holland, Extension Educator at the University of Missouri, Illinois, and Hawaii; 20 years of experience.

Anne Ku Received her formal music training in Okinawa, Duke University, and Utrecht Conservatory. She has focused on developing piano repertoire for the adult beginner, including composing and arranging music for group piano playing.

Ben Howard B.A. Painting; Website Developer; Instructor-Programming Web Design classes; Art and computer programming brings both Art Computer programming perspective to Website Designs; over 13 years experience.

Chantelle Brown Worked as a lifeguard for over fifteen years with the County of Maui in pool and beach lifeguarding; Instructor for American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Classes for over ten years; and Instructor for CPR/AED classes.

Chris Pearce Founding director of the International Sake Association and the organizer of The Joy of Sake, the largest sake-tasting event outside Japan. The only certified sake assessor in the United States.

Clifford Rutherford Program Coordinator and instructor for the Construction Academy at UHMC. Taught energy and construction trade credit courses with the Sustainable Construction Technology Program.

Constance LeCompte B.S. BS-Accounting, Excelsior College, NY; Corporate Controller; Consultant to entrepreneurs and other business (8 years); Accountant over 25 years of experience.

Craig Tanaka  President of the Maui County Hotel & Resort Security Association; over 20 years experience.

Dan Schulte Instructor at Maui Culinary Academy, UHMC; Certified ServSafe Instructor and Proctor with the National Restaurant Association; 25 years experience.

Danielle Miller B.B.A. Social media expert, small business enthusiast, and founder of a marketing consulting and coaching company on Maui. She currently works with global and local businesses on a daily basis to build profitable relationship through internet marketing.

Debra Imada B.A. BS in Accountancy, Bentley College, Waltham, MA; over 20 year accounting experience working with and in small businesses (for profit and non-profit) including teaching accounting to new businesses.

Desmund Manaba 18 years of experience farming Axis Deer, he is currently the only business man in Hawaii selling USDA inspected venison and Axis Deer by-products. He has developed national and international markets for Axis Deer.

Don Suzuki  Licensed electrical engineer who is an instructor for the Electrical Apprenticeship Program at UHMC.

Edward Buns  B.A., Guitar Performance, Marylhurst University, Oregon; 20 years of performing professionally and teaching at the college level.

Elizabeth Foote Hawaii Field Manager at Coral Reef Alliance, Founder and Executive Director at Project S.E.A.-Link. Oregon State University, University of California, San Diego.

Faith Ewbank 24 years as a marketing specialist. She grew up on a ranch in Kipahulu. She has made it her avocation to study and research the County, State and Federal regulations on animal waste streams and compliance. She is currently a waste stream consultant.

Francis D. Hessey Jr. PGA Professional, Instructor and coach at The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course.

Hannah Bernard  Co-founder and President of the Hawai‘i Wildlife Fund; 30 years of experience.

Jason Coughlin  is a LEED AP for New Construction and has over seven years of CAD 2D drafting experience.  Jason has many years of experience as a contractor along with experience in the Telecommunications, Water Utilities, Land Surveying, Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering fields.

Ian Edmondson Instructor of creative writing at UHMC. He is passionate about writing and empowering others to express themselves and find their creative voice.

Jackie Harp Business Administration, currently Director of Development for Family Life Center, Inc.; Executive Director and fundraiser – non-profit sector; Grant writer, for capital campaigns and programs from both the private sector and government sources; 30 years experience.

Jean Pezzoli 30 years on Maui as a college professor, Maui County Arborist Committee member, Maui Outdoor Circle president, planting project organizer, workshop presenter, and author.

Joanne Doell B.A., M.A. Instructor-technology, business and customized training courses; Coordinator, College for Kids/College Bound, EdVenture; 20 years+ experience with K-12  adults in Hawaii, California.

John Bendon Founding principal of Green Building Hawaii and is a leader in Hawaii in the fields of green building and energy efficiency. John holds a Master’s Degree in Real Estate and Construction Management from the University of Denver. He is a LEED Accredited Professional with a specialty in LEED Homes, Certified Energy Rater under RESNET, and a Certified Energy Manager (CEM).

Judy Starbuck SLIM Community Garden Coordinator. Past program manager at Akaku Television, on the sales team at Kula True Value Nursery, and presently the garden coordinator at Ali`i Kula Lavendar Farm.

Leo Domingo Associates of Science degree in Fire and Environmental Emergency Response from Honolulu Community College and a BA in Business Administration from University of Hawai‘i at West Oahu.

Director, OCET-Office of Continuing Education and Training; Certified Facilitator for several FranklinCovey Programs; specialties include people development, organizational effectiveness, public policy and leadership in business cultures-Mainland and Hawai‘i; over 25 years experience.

Mary Santa Maria Public Health Educator who has trained successful professional interpreters on Maui in both community and health settings. She is an authorized Trainer for the Bridging the Gap Medical Interpreter program, as well as several other health related programs.

Mckenna Hallett Professional sales trainer since 1987. Mckenna has worked in the field of sales and marketing for over 50 years and is the owner of My Golden Words.

Melissa Jenks-Olivitt Farmer and Cordon Bleu trained chef. She has had a private catering business in London, UK. and a restaurant in Singapore. She has taught cooking to students at Seabury Hall.

Michael Duponte University of Hawaii, CTAHR, CES Livestock extension agent based in Hilo. He has trained under Master Cho in the preparation and livestock application of Indigenous MicroOrganisms (IMOs), in the Korean Natural Farming system.

Nicole Brown CGBP Certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner who believes in the power of foods to transform our health. She is also the only Certified GAPS (Gut and Psychology Syndrome) Practitioner in Hawaii. Phyllis Robinson Ed.D. Dr. Robinson was the founder of the Maui Axis Deer Harvesting Cooperative, the former Chair of the Maui County Board of Water Supply, is a current member of the Maui Axis Deer Working Group, a board member of the Hawaii Farmers Union United – Maui Chapter, and holds her doctorate in non-formal adult education.
