October 19, 2023 Aysha Jarnesky

UH Maui College recently hosted the Malama Bash on the Great Lawn. The event was aimed at reconnecting students to the campus community. Various School clubs and entities set up welcome tables and offerings, free dinner was served and a lively performance by the band Roots and Culture infused the atmosphere with reggae classics. Despite an initial drizzle, the weather cleared up and all went well. The overall feel good vibe of the Malama Bash was what made it a total success.

Among the attendees were Sustainability club (Student Ohana for Sustainability), who engaged students with a fun quiz and cool prizes. Ho’oulu Student News and Na Leo Literary Review offered candy corn and chocolates while seeking for new writer recruits and creative submissions. Kabatak Filipino club enticed students to join by dancing their cultural bamboo dance. The InterVarsity club displayed both photos and treats, plus passed out free bibles, and the automotive club displayed some killer cars and showcased the insides of a few vehicles. The Kealahoimai Massage Therapy program offered a real treat- Massages! Other activities such as lei-making and succulent sales garnered participation. The grinds provided made up a chili plate lunch, with rice and Mac salad, and the reggae sounds of Roots and Culture set the tone for a laid back, warm welcome of an affair. The highlight of the event was the raffle, where lucky students secured prizes like Beats headphones, iPads, and AirPods. Students ran and lined up to grab more tickets for a chance to win.

The college remains determined to revitalize its campus culture and draw more students back to participate in campus life. If you feel called to, don’t hesitate to reach out to a campus club and join. These opportunities are designed to help provide students with experience, entertainment, and to propel students forward. As the editor of Ho’oulu Student News and Na Leo Literary Review, we encourage you, the students, to share your thoughts and insights. Write to us about the kinds of events and initiatives that would entice you to join in and allow our campus to thrive. We would love to hear your suggestions for college events or activities.
