2019 Student Financial Aid Workshops

University of Hawai’i Maui’s Financial Aid office is here to support your endeavors and it’s never too early to get started. They’re offering a series of informative workshops on the topic of financial aid, scholarships, and educational funding with the Educational Opportunity Center (EOC).

The first FAFSA workshop was held September 10, 2019.  If you don’t know what the FAFSA is, listen up!  The FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, which is very important to fill out as there may be financial aid opportunities that you’re not aware of. The FAFSA application opens on October 1, 2019 for fall 2020. If you need assistance and have questions, schedule an appointment with Financial Aid or attend these workshops.

Another financial aid option are the UH Common Scholarships.  The workshops prepare students for ‘scholarship season’.  On October 8, 9, 15 and 16 there are workshops to help you leave a personal statement for the UH Common Application.  The required essay is 900 words maximum, which is approximately two pages. This may include educational and career goals, current employment, accomplishments, honors or awards, and your personal background. You may also want to include special situations in your life, challenges you are facing as a result of your current financial circumstances, or any barriers to you obtaining your educational goals. If you are unsure what to include, the workshop leaders can offer suggestions.

The subject of the October 22nd and 23rd workshops is on how to request letters of recommendations and references.  There will be advice on how to ask for recommendations in the best way.  On November 5, 6 and 7th, the workshops will be presented to help you submit your UH System Common Application. Again, you may be required to bring certain information, such as transcripts, letters of reference, and the required personal essay.

These workshops encourage only a little step every week in order to complete the entire applications on time – nothing like smooth sailing! It’s worth taking the time to attend a workshop and apply, and if you can’t make the workshop set up an appointment with Financial Aid. Let UH Maui support you as you soar into your dreams. Reserve your space today!
