TRAD6867 Painter Pre-Apprenticeship Training

May 12 - 16 | M-F | 8:00 - 16:30

Monday: Introduction to Painting Tools & Surface Preparation Proper use of basic hand tools: putty knife, caulking gun, brushes, rollers (6”/9”) Introduction to spray pump and spray gun Surface preparation: putty application and caulking (8 hours) Cleaning and maintaining tools

Tuesday: Surface Inspection & Priming Checking surfaces for caulking shrinkage and putty application Masking windows, floors, and other surfaces Priming surfaces using brushes, rollers, and spray pumps (8 hours)

Wednesday: Painting Techniques & Application Applying primer and paint to designated surfaces (8 hours) Hands-on practice with brushes, rollers, and spray pumps

Thursday: Detail Work & Trim Painting Painting trims around windows, corners, and door entryways (8 hours)

Friday: Final Inspection, Touch-Ups & Cleanup Reviewing painted areas for full coverage and making touch-ups Maintenance of spray pumps and spray guns Cleaning work areas, demasking windows and floors Course Objectives:

Carpentry

Carpentry Pre-Apprentice Training

March 24 - May 23 | M-F | 07:30 - 16:30

This 8-week, intensive, hands-on pre-apprenticeship program serves as a direct pathway to becoming a registered apprentice with the Hawaii Carpenters Apprenticeship Program. Training will start with instruction in carpentry fundamentals and basic tool use, construction math, basic print reading, metal framing, concrete formwork and drywall, and culminate with a 2-week paid internship at an active construction site. Upon successful completion of this pre-apprenticeship program, students will be granted direct entry to any one of the three registered apprenticeship programs administered by the Hawaii Carpenters Apprenticeship & Training Fund (HCATF).

The pre-apprenticeship program is divided into two parts:

Part 1: 6-week Related-Trade Instruction

This course is developed specifically for community members who are interested in volunteering for Habitat for Humanity in their future projects in rebuilding of Lahaina homes. In this 5-day training, students will learn Basic Carpentry, Basic Electrical and Basic Plumbing.

Blueprint Reading

BLPR101 Blueprint & Drafting Foundations

This class introduces the fundamental principles of pictorial and architectural drawing and blueprint reading. Focuses on the use of mechanical drawing instruments and freehand sketching to make shop drawings and develop interpretation and visualization techniques as they refer to detailed artistic renderings and construction drawings, and concepts essential to related fields of carpentry, architecture, engineering, and graphic arts.

This free class teaches operation of a rototiller and wheel type tractor with allied implements on the College farm. Includes safety, maintenance, three point hitch hookups, hydraulics, and field adjustments.

AG251 Sustainable Crop Production

Spring 2025 | TR | 9:00 - 11:45

This free class introduces production methods for selected crops including propagation planting, fertilization, irrigation, pest control, harvesting, and marketing. Evaluates conventional and alternative methods of production and analyzes effects of these practices. Examines economic and social impacts. Field trips to production areas.

AG252 Sustainable Crop Production II

This free class reinforces production practices for sustainable agriculture. Develops skills in designing, planning, and executing a sustainable production system for wholesale and retail sales. Determines cost of production and integrates multiple marketing practices. Evaluates products, cultural practices, and marketing methods. Practices farm record keeping.

TRAD 8910 Electrical Technology Program - Journey Worker Electrician

This free year-long course completes the academic coursework required by Hawaii Revised Statute HRS 448E for journey worker electrical apprentices. Participants gain foundational skills in electrical safety, as well as applied math, AC/DC theory, motors and motor control, NEC, and transformers.
