Prior Learning Assessment – Three Ways To Earn Credit

Credit by Institutional Exam

If you believe you can demonstrate mastery of the learning outcomes for a UH Maui College course, you can ask the course instructor to give you a comprehensive exam to test your knowledge. If you get a grade of C or higher on the exam, you will earn course credit. This process is also called “taking a challenge exam” or testing out of a course.

The exam can include a written component as well as skills or proficiency demonstrations. Please note that not every course is available for CBIE.

Before being awarded credit, you will need to pay 50% of the regular course fee.

Standardized Testing

Standardized tests are national exams that allow you to demonstrate your proficiency in specific subject areas. There are several types of standardized tests considered for acceptance at UH Maui College, including:

The IB Program is an internationally accepted qualification for entry into institutes of higher education, much like the AP program. Students who receive minimum scores of five or higher on IB exams may receive credit for the equivalent course.

Non-Collegiate Sponsored Education

NCSE is training you received somewhere other than at a college, such as through your job or military service. To receive credit, your NCSE training must have contained content equivalent to college-level work in a course offered at UH Maui College.

To receive credit for non-collegiate sponsored education, you must work with a PLA advisor and submit a description of training and proof of successful completion.
