UHMC CURRICULUM COMMITTEE

Note the following:
- The deadlines are the dates when a proposal must be approved by a division chair and submitted to the Curriculum Committee.
- The Curriculum Committee encourages faculty to submit proposals early in the fall/spring semester.
- Proposals submitted in the fall and spring are effective one year from the semester upon which it was approved
- Special topics courses can be offered in the following semester after approval

Curriculum (course or program) may be proposed by full-time faculty members in a discipline or program. Proposals are submitted through the Kuali curriculum platform at maui.kuali.co. Please refer to this Kuali tutorial or contact your department curriculum representative for assistance.

When proposing a new course, please refer to the UHMC General Catalog Active Course List and the UH Master Course List to research similar courses. Similar courses should align in alpha, number, title, description, prerequisite and credit. Please refer to the UHCC policies on Credit Hour, Course Numbering Convention and Common Course Numbering.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and Course Competencies are required for each course.
- STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
  - An SLO should specify the knowledge, abilities or attitudes that students are expected to attain or develop and should be measurable and observable.
- COURSE COMPETENCY
  - One or more Course Competencies should be developed for each SLO specifying the skills needed in order to attain or develop the SLO.
- Both the SLO and Course Competency should begin with an active verb (see Bloom’s Taxonomy) that identifies the performance to be demonstrated.
  - Example:

SLO

Demonstrates knowledge of the origins, migrations and settlement patterns of Oceania.

Investigate migration and settlement in the Pacific based on anthropological, genealogical, linguistic, biological and historical research.

Course Designations
- Courses may be designated to satisfy our General Education offerings in these areas: Foundations (FQ), Global Multicultural Perspectives (FGA), (FGB), (FGC) Hawaiʻi Emphasis (HI) or HAPS, Written Communication. If appropriate, please request approval and submit a completed and signed form with your course proposal.
Collegewide Academic Student Learning Outcomes (CASLOs)
- Each program of study at UHMC integrates curriculum that develops CASLOs through coursework. Each course is assessed for CASLO development individually and as part of a larger program. Please complete this CASLO form and upload into your Kuali proposal. Each program should also keep a comprehensive excel sheet mapping course CASLO development in their courses and program.
