Financial Aid Award Policies

DISBURSEMENT OF AID

Your financial aid will be applied electronically to your registration charges approximately ten days prior to the first day of instruction for each semester, unless your offer is finalized after the start of school or you have any outstanding requirements. Any excess funds  will be refunded to you via paper check (sent through the regular mail) or directly deposited into your bank account (if you signed up for eRefunds). ELIGIBLE DEGREE PROGRAM & COURSES

To receive aid, you must be admitted as a classified student in an aid eligible Associate or Certificate Degree Program. If your degree program changes to an ineligible degree program, your financial aid will not disburse or will need to be taken back. Courses you enroll for must apply toward your degree. Students can see their degree program and courses in their STAR account. Any courses listed as NOT IN PLAN or NON-APPLICABLE will not count for financial aid.

ENROLLMENT IN COURSES/ATTENDANCE

Offers are generally based on full-time enrollment (12 credits or greater). Offers will be reduced for enrollment levels less than full-time. If you do not begin attendance or you change your enrollment (add or drop classes) after your aid has been disbursed, you may be required to pay back to the aid programs and/or have an outstanding obligation at the institution. *Note: to receive Federal Student Loans, a student must be enrolled at least half-time (6+ credits).

CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT/DISTANCE ED.

If you are enrolled in Distance Education courses and/or concurrently enrolled at other University ofHawaii campuses, under certain conditions you may be able to receive aid for those courses. All UH courses you are registered for will be reviewed for Financial Aid eligibility. Please note that not all distance education/concurrent courses qualify for financial aid. For a course to be eligible, the following conditions must be met:

• The student must be declared in an eligible degree program at University of Hawai'i Maui College.
• The student must be registered for at least one University of Hawai'i Maui College course.
• The distance education/concurrent course must meet degree program requirements and be transferable into the degree program.

Students receiving financial aid for distance education/concurrent courses may still be required to pay for the distance courses separately. Students should review their balance after receiving financial aid. In addition, students are responsible for informing the Financial Aid Office of any changes in enrollment. 

WITHDRAWING FROM SCHOOL

If you completely withdraw from classes (dropping of all courses) or you began attendance and failed to earn a passing grade in at least one course offered over the entire term (known as an Unofficial Withdrawal), you are subject to the Return of Title IV refund calculation as dictated by federal regulations. 

SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS

You are expected to maintain satisfactory academic progress (SAP) toward the completion of a degree. To remain eligible, you are expected to meet all Academic Eligibility Requirements: Maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0,  successfully complete at least 67% of total credit hours attempted, and complete your degree within the time frame allowed at UH Maui College.

OTHER FINANCIAL AID RESOURCES

You are required to inform our office if you receive outside financial resources (all scholarships or financial resources not administered by the UH Maui College Financial Aid Office, e.g: Kamehameha/Hawai'i Community Foundation/UH Foundation scholarships, etc). As required by Federal Regulations, an adjustment to your offer may be necessary to reflect the increase of your resources. Failure to notify the Financial Aid Office may delay financial aid disbursement and/or may require repayment to the university. 

OVER AWARDS

An "over award" situation may result if funds have already been disbursed. This may happen when the following occurs (some examples): A student:

• receives additional resources (if not already accounted for in original award offer);
• residency status changes
• living situation changes
• enrollment is below full time at University of Hawai'i Maui College
• verification information changes their Student Aid Index (SAI) calculation

 *Repayment may be required, and/or adjustments may be made to other types of aid and/or future disbursements within the academic year.
