LEGEND OF

MĀUI SNARING THE SUN

In Hawaiian mythology, Māui is a culture hero and ancient chief. This picture depicts one of his feats capturing the sun and ordering the sun to travel across the sky at a slower pace so that his mother’s kapa (bark cloth) could dry. This feat takes place on the island of Maui at Haleakalā (house of the sun).

ALOHA

LIFE ON MAUI

The island of Maui in Hawai‘i embraces the Hawaiian saying “Maui nō ka ‘oi” which translates to “Maui is the best,” and once you visit Maui for the first time, you will quickly see why. Pristine beaches and majestic mountains offer an inspirational backdrop that promotes higher education with new perspectives. Situated in the valley between the West Maui Mountains and Haleakalā, “House of the Sun,” the University of Hawai‘i Maui College (UHMC) offers world-class education and is less than a 10-hour flight from many major Asian cities. UHMC is the perfect choice for studying abroad with 23 areas of study and 4 Bachelor of Science degrees. On campus, you will find a strong student support staff and its own language institute to ensure language is not a barrier when learning in an English speaking setting. With rich Hawaiian culture at the forefront of UHMC’s educational values, our island’s diversity adds a new and rewarding mindset both in and out of the classroom. Centrally located shopping and homestay accommodations further add to the convenience of studying at the University of Hawai‘i Maui College.

UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I MAUI COLLEGE

We in Hawai‘i share the gift of living in the home of our host culture—Hawaiian. Everything we do is, or should be, imbued with Hawaiian values and respectful of the traditions practiced here for centuries, long before the ancestors of other ethnicities landed on our shores. It is incumbent on Hawai‘i’s only public institutions of higher education to both educate Hawaiian youth of our islands to prepare them for productive lives, and continue to play a key role in preserving and perpetuating the culture that exists nowhere else on earth. It is a gift and an obligation of which we are keenly aware. If not the University of Hawai‘i, then who? The University of Hawai‘i Maui College through the Hawai‘i Papao O Ke Ao perspective led by Chancellor Dr. Lui Hokoana offers a distinctively rich diverse perspective on international exchange and education.

STUDENT TESTIMONIAL

Karen Suzuki - Kishiwada, Japan

“I moved from Japan to Maui to attend the University of Hawai‘i Maui College. I had a wonderful host family on Maui. There was my host father Kealii, my host mother Sienna and one host brother Buster, plus a dog “Peanut” at the home. When I first arrived on Maui, I had a hard time communicating with people in English even though I had studied so much in Japan. Most people didn’t understand my English, which caused me to lose confidence. Fortunately, I had a host family and friends that encouraged me and to practice English. I got back my confidence. During that time, I volunteered to help out at the Library and UH Maui, which also helped me improve my English. My plans were to study and graduate with only an Associate of Arts Degree (AA) in Liberal Arts from UHMC. I was interested in Tourism, so I changed my plans and transferred to UH Manoa and graduated from the Travel Industry Management School at UH Manoa. My experience in Hawai‘i has given me the tools, confidence and to have a successful life. Mahalo to the University of Hawai‘i.”

Chiaki Chami Ami Chibana - Okinawa, Japan

“With a desire to study abroad, I selected Maui as my first step in obtaining my educational goals. My father encouraged me and brought me to Maui and felt happy to know that a community of families, instructors and counselors would be there for me. Studying on Maui and Oahu helped me understand Hawai’i from different perspectives. The diversity gave me a heightened awareness and deep appreciation of the island’s multi-cultural population and learned that mutual respect is a key factor in fostering cooperative relationships. I personally enjoyed my education and all the support I received and now wish to contribute my time and energy to creating a stronger bond between Hawai’i, Okinawa, and Japan.”
