Program Overview

Certificate of Competence / 23 Credits
UH Maui Collegeʻs Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems Specialist Certificate prepares students for a career in the wastewater field, working alongside engineers and contractors to complete cesspool conversions and onsite wastewater system installations. The certificate includes classes in wastewater, sustainability, and construction, and is a blend of in person and online classes (offered at Hawaiʻi-CC). Students gain hands-on experience working alongside wastewater professionals and complete an internship in the wastewater field to prepare them to immediately enter the workforce.
Students must achieve a C or better in all classes in order to earn the certificate.

Fall (13 credits)
  • Introduction to Wastewater Management (3 credits)
  • Wastewater Treatment Design (3 credits)
  • Introduction to the Science of Sustainability (3 credits)
  • Drafting Conventions and Blueprint Reading (4 credits, online, Hawaiʻi-CC) Spring (7 credits)
  • Cesspool Conversion and Onsite Wastewater Treatment Installation (4 credits)
  • Computer Aided Drafting (3 credits, online, Hawaiʻi-CC)
Summer (3 credits)
  • Internship: Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems Specialist (3 credits)
