How can we move forward to prevent this learning loss without penalizing students or making them feel suspect? First, the webinar emphasizes two steps: (1) designing writing assessments to encourage intrinsic motivation and student engagement, and (2) making academic integrity policies explicit about AI use. The webinar also considers the pros and cons of AI text detection software, designing assignments ChatGPT is not good at, and more.

Faculty Online Course Development

Message from the UHCC System…

Faculty Resources to Prepare for Online/Hybrid Courses in Fall 2020

As we look ahead to Fall 2020, we want to ensure we continue to provide students with high quality  courses and support faculty with robust professional development opportunities. As a result, Maui College will be adopting the UHCC System established best practices for faculty teaching online/hybrid and offer numerous PD choices.

Shared UHCC Baseline for Faculty to Commit to Online/Hybrid in Fall

Here are some guidelines for faculty members who commit to teaching all online and/or hybrid in Fall 2020:

  • Use of Laulima or campus-approved LMS to
    • post course syllabus
    • post course schedule
    • provide contact information of faculty including faculty office hours
    • set and post a regular response time for students (24 hours weekdays/48 hours weekends)
  • Understand that proctored exams may not be administered by a third party (e.g., campus testing center, Examity, ProctorU).
  • Participate in summer professional development training (if not previously completed campus-approved PD).
  • Have regular and substantive interaction with students to meet accreditation requirements for online delivery.

Menu of Professional Development Options that faculty can participate in to be better prepared for fall and/or be better prepared for a disrupted semester

Faculty typically use the summer months to improve their curriculum and courses. The following options are targeted specifically to online curriculum development.

If you are interested in participating in a summer PD opportunity or have questions about one of the options, please contact your VCAA. For general inquiries and questions, please complete this form.

UHMC Zoom Pedagogy Sessions

An offering of a community of learners focused on the pedagogy of synchronous teaching. This will be a short-term community of learners over the summer that will focus on the pedagogy of teaching on Zoom or other synchronous platforms. We won’t focus on the mechanics of teaching on Zoom, but on ways to help students achieve course learning outcomes.

It wouldn’t be training sessions and we would not teach the content. What we can offer is facilitated, focused discussions.

We would develop topics based on the needs and wishes of participants. We would then find speakers, readings, and facilitate discussions on the topics. Some potential topics include creating a sense of belonging in a Zoom classroom, creative approaches to assessing learning, encouraging and tracking participation, and using breakout rooms for small group work.

The group will meet for 6 weeks this summer on Thursdays, starting from June 18, 2020 to July 23, 2020 from 2:30 to 4:00 pm.

If you are interested, please email Julie (juliepow@hawaii.edu) or BK (bkg@hawaii.edu) – This series is at capacity.

  • Preventing ChatGPT Misuse: Making Academic Integrity Policies Explicit About AIArchived recording (search by the title or filter the search for “On Demand”) – Many of us in higher education are concerned that students will use ChatGPT and miss the purpose of the writing assignment.

Important Trainings on COVID-19 Overview & Contract Tracer for UHMC Employees*

UH Maui College recommends that all staff and faculty engaging in in-person activities on campus complete the following trainings on COVID-19 Overview and Contact Tracer. Both trainings share important information for everyone.

If you have already completed Dr. Denise Cohen’s COVID-19 Overview Video and the Contact Tracer Training, please use the UH COVID training as a resource. It takes less than 30 minutes to complete (three <10-minute videos and a short quiz). It is relevant for working for UH – the material presented is relevant to UHMC, except using the LumiSlide check-in (we use the UHMC app).

It also presents HR information on the kind of leave we can take if we should contract COVID or need to take care of someone with COVID.

More information about The Craft of Teaching Initiative

Craft of Teaching is a teaching cohort. Craft is open to faculty members, including full-time, part-time and lecturers, who have at least two semesters of teaching experience at UHMC. This faculty development program is interdisciplinary and interdepartmental.

Purpose: To build learning cohorts of instructors to support each other’s growth in the craft of teaching. Members will learn strategies for making courses more engaging, teaching content more effectively, improving and assessing student mastery, while enhancing professionalism and the intrinsic rewards and joys of teaching.

Being in a cohort provides opportunities to learn from research, articles, books, experts and discussions with each other in a positive, facilitated environment and then reflect on what you have learned and then apply it to make improvement for both UHMC students and yourself.

In cohort meetings members will present and discuss plans based on what they have learned during cohort meetings or from other sources, report on implementation, and get feedback from others. In addition to participation and supporting others in the cohort members will be responsible for two projects.

At the final meeting of a cohort members will submit a short, written summary of each of their projects:

  1. Making improvements for students:
    • Identify a barrier for student learning in this course.
    • Develop a strategy (ies) to assist students in overcoming this barrier. This could be a content issue or a student non-cognitive issue.
    • Implement the strategy (ies) or make a plan to do so the next time the course is taught.
  2. Making improvements for yourself:
    • Identify a barrier to your enjoyment, engagement and/or comfort teaching this course. This could be some of the content of the course or characteristics of students who take the course.
    • Develop a strategy (ies) for increasing your enjoyment, engagement, and/or comfort.
    • Implement the strategy (ies) or make a plan to do so the next time the course is taught.

Benefits: Many, including being more professional and enjoying your teaching more as well as developing new strategies to help your students both while learning and while they are engaging in the learning process at UHMC. For faculty members, this experience will enhance your tenure and promotion documents; while lecturers will receive a stipend when the projects are completed.

Email BK at bkg@hawaii.edu to let us know if you will be joining us or if you have questions.

Craft of Teaching – Spring 2018

  • March 1
  • March 15

  • April 26

The cohort formed in Spring will continue until the end of Fall semester 2018.

There is also a cohort starting in Fall 2018 which is planned to meet on Wednesday afternoons at 3:00 PM. So if you cannot join this Spring, perhaps you can arrange to come starting Fall 2018 for the two semesters.

Purpose: To support “excellence in teaching and learning” by creating learning cohorts of instructors from across disciplines to support each other’s growth in the practice of teaching. Members will learn strategies for making courses more engaging, teaching content more effectively, improving and assessing student mastery, while enhancing professionalism and the intrinsic rewards and joys of teaching.

Benefits: Benefits are many including being more professional and enjoying your teaching more well as developing new strategies to help your students both while learning and while they are engaging in the learning process at UHMC.
